Clark Slips Past Women's Soccer, 1-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Kara Fischer (Belmont, Mass.) scored the only goal of the match in the 23rd minute, and junior goalkeeper Gaby Paolino (North Potomac, Md.) made nine saves as visiting Clark University stunned Babson College, 1-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With the win, Clark moves to 2-12-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play, while Babson, which is ranked eighth in New England by the NSCAA, drops to 10-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the NEWMAC.

Paolino made a pair of early saves on Beavers' junior Meghan Tyson (Scarborough, Maine) in the opening 20 minutes of the game before Fischer gave the Cougars the lead. Junior Nikki Feinberg (San Antonio, Texas) fed Fischer, who buried a shot from the left side of the box for her first goal of the season.

The Green and White held a 14-1 edge in first-half shots but put only three on frame. Senior Jessica DiPhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) was denied when her shot in the 38th minute hit the post, and sophomore Jennifer Narlee (Medfield, Mass.) saw her header float over the crossbar just seconds later.

Babson continued to press forward throughout the second half but was unable to find an equalizer. Paolino made six stops in the final 45 minutes, including her best of the day on senior Avika Shah (Scotch Plains, N.J.) in the 75th minute. Shah carried the ball down the right sideline before cutting inside and lofting a 25-yard shot that Paolino tipped just over the crossbar to help Clark stay in front.

Senior goalkeeper Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass.) made one save for the Beavers, who held a 25-2 edge in shots on the afternoon. The Green and White also had an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson travels Emerson College at 6 p.m., while Clark will be at Wellesley College for a 4 p.m. start.

GAME NOTES: The Beavers are now 15-9-3 all-time against the Cougars and suffered just their third loss in the series since 2006 on Saturday…Babson was shut out for the first time since a scoreless draw against UMass-Boston in its season opener, a stretch of 13 games...prior to Saturday's loss, the Beavers had been unbeaten in their last 14 games when holding their opponent to one goal or less.
