WORCESTER, Mass. -- Matt Carr (Somersworth, NH) tallied 19 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lift WPI to a 70-49 defeat of Babson in a men's basketball contest played on Wednesday evening.  The Engineers, who continue to receive votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25, improve to 15-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Babson dips to 11-10 on the season and 4-4 in the NEWMAC. 
 
After Carr picked up his second foul just over eight minutes into the contest, WPI embarked on an 11-2 spurt to transform a 14-12 edge into a 25-14 advantage seven minutes later.  During the run, the Crimson and Gray held Babson to 1-of-7 shooting from the floor while harassing the Beavers into eight turnovers.  Buoyed by the mid-half surge, WPI took a 33-20 advantage into the locker room.     
 
Carr was a man possessed in the second half, draining 8-of-10 shots from the floor and grabbing five of his team-best six rebounds as the Engineers never saw its advantage cut to single digits in the second stanza. 
 
Carr was the only player on either team to reach double figures in scoring.  Freshman Marco Coppola (Watertown, MA) tossed in nine points while Domenick Mastascusa (North Reading, MA) paced all reserves with eight points off the bench.
 
Sam Longwell (Acton, MA) dished out a career-high five assists for the hosts, who as a team posted their most assists (17) since a December 10th win over Fitchburg State.
 
WPI received a defensive boast from Jameel Galloway (Randolph, MA).  The junior center, who saw significant first half minutes, with Carr saddled with the two early fouls, chipped in the five rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks.
 
Marcus McDermott (Milton, MA) led the Babson charge with nine points to go along with five boards and two steals.  Sean McClung (Merrimack, NH) added seven points while Alex Rudolph (Bal Harbour, FL) and Russell Braithwaite (Brooklyn, NY) each had six.  David Mack (Holden, MA) headlined the Beaver's efforts on the boards, grabbing seven rebounds.
 
WPI plays the middle game of a three-game road trip on Saturday when it ventures to Cambridge to face third-ranked MIT at 3pm.  Clark begins a three-game road trip of its own Saturday when it heads to Springfield for a 3pm contest.
