Second-Half Surge Helps Tufts Top Men's Basketball, 83-58

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. -- An 11-0 second-half run enabled the Tufts University men's basketball team to pull away from Babson College on Sunday, as the Jumbos defeated the Beavers, 83-58, in the consolation game of the New England Big 4 Challenge at Brandeis University. With the win, Tufts moved to 3-2 on the year, while Babson slipped to 2-3 with its third loss in a row.

Junior Matt Palazini led Babson in scoring with 16 points, thanks to a 9-of-13 clip from the free throw line. Sophomore John Wickey netted 13 points to go with six rebounds, as he was named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior captain Peter Foley contributed eight points and six rebounds off the bench and senior Russell Braithwaite tacked on seven boards, including four off the offensive glass.

Tufts placed five players in double figures in the win, including 13 points from Stephen Haladyna, 12 from Kwame Firempong, and 11 apiece from Tommy Folliard and Olive Cohen. Scott Anderson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Jumbos, while Matt Lanchantin added 10 points, five caroms, and three blocked shots.

Babson took its largest lead of the content midway through the closely-contested first half, as a Wickey jumper made it 22-16 in favor of the Beavers. However, Tufts rallied to eventually take a slim 30-29 cushion into the break.

Five early points by Palazini kept Babson within striking distance at 37-34 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Jumbos put the game away with an 11-0 surge that pushed their advantage to 48-34 with 14:03 left to play. A Braithwaite lay-up would end the run at the 13-minute mark, but Tufts would go on to net six more unanswered points to expand the margin to 52-36. The Beavers would not threaten the rest of the way as Tufts claimed the 83-58 win.

Babson will look to get back on the left side of the ledger this Thursday, when the Green and White play host to Newbury College at 7 p.m.
