Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- First-year David Mack scored a career-high 14 points and junior Alex Rudolph added six points during a key 7-0 run late in the game as the Babson College men's basketball team defeated host Wheaton College, 52-45, in a NEWMAC contest on Saturday afternoon.
With their second win in a row, the Beavers are now 10-8 overall and 3-3 in league play, while the Lyons fall to 8-8 overall and 2-3 against NEWMAC competition.
Mack came off the bench to score 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field an a 4-of-6 clip from the free throw line. Junior Russell Braithwaite added 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals for the Green and White, Rudolph finished with 10 points and four boards, and senior captain Matt Florio chipped in with six points and four assists.
Wheaton was led by Will Bayliss, who was the only Lyon in double figures with 12 points, and Shawn Daily, who scored six points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Beavers led by as many as 10 twice in the opening half, first when sophomore Matt Palazini's three-pointer made it 15-5 and again when a Mack lay-up made it 17-7. Wheaton would close the gap to as few as three later in the session, with Babson eventually carrying a 25-21 advantage into the break.
Lay-ups by Rudolph and Braithwaite as well as two free throws from Florio enabled the Beavers to open the second half with a 6-0 run, as they matched their largest lead of the game at 31-21 with 17:44 left in the game. The Lyons would chip away at the deficit over the course of the period before finally pulling even after a Bayliss jumper tied the score at 41-41 with 5:49 remaining.
The game remained deadlocked until the 4:04 mark, when Rudolph drained a three-pointer to ignite a key 7-0 run that resulted in a 48-41 Babson lead with 2:20 to go. Wheaton again cut it to three with back-to-back buckets by Brendan Degnan and Bayliss, but Mack and Braithwaite each sank a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds to clinch the 52-45 victory.
