NEW LONDON, Conn.--Sophomore Russell Braithwaite
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) was a perfect six for six from the floor
and finished with a game-high 20 points and Babson shot 64.7
percent (11 of 17) in the second half leading the Beavers to a
69-62 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and
Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Babson improves to 9-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play while
Coast Guard drops to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC.
Coast Guard had the biggest lead of the first half 18-12 with 10:04
left in the back-and-forth first half which saw the game tied ten
times including 33-33 at halftime.
Sophomore Ed Gailor knocked down a 3-pointer with 13:22 left to
give Coast Guard a 42-41 lead, but Babson used a 12-2 run for a
44-53 lead with 8:56 left in the game.
The Beavers took its largest lead of the game, 62-48, following
a basket by junior Kris Noonan (Boothbay Harbor,
Maine) with 3:05 left.
Coast Guard used a 12-2 spurt of its own capped on a 3-pointer
by senior Adam Radtke to cut the deficit to 64-60 with 54 seconds
left.
Braithwaite and sophomore Marcus McDermott (Milton,
Mass.) each made a pair of free throws as Babson iced the
game taking a 68-60 lead with 28 seconds left.
Senior Matt Zoia (Nashua, N.H.) added 13 points
for Babson while sophomore Peter Foley (Wells,
Maine) had a team-high eight rebounds off the bench.
Babson shot 52.4 percent from the field (22-42) while Coast
Guard shot 42.4 percent (25-59) in the game.
Freshman Kevin Sowers had a team-high 15 points, a career-high
tying six rebounds and game-high six assists for Coast Guard while
senior Jevon James added 12 points and a game-high nine
rebounds.
The Beavers return to action on Wednesday night when they host
MIT for a NEWMAC contest at 7pm.
