BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior Colleen Pepin (Fairhaven,
Mass.) scored the game-winning goal four minutes into overtime to
lift the visiting Endicott College Gulls to a 1-0 victory over host
Babson College in non-conference women's soccer action on
Thursday afternoon. With the win, Endicott improved to 5-2-1 on the
year, while the Beavers fell to 5-2-1.
Endicott nearly scored at the 40-minute mark, but sophomore
Chelsea Garlock's (Meriden, Conn.) bid from the right side of
the box glanced off the crossbar and was cleared by the Babson
defense. The Beavers then had two great chances in the second half,
but Gulls' first-year goalie Natalie Wyrsch (Dover, N.H.)
made a pair of diving stops – the first to her right on a
shot attempt by sophomore Ashley Tourso (Glen Rock,
N.J.) at the 70-minute mark and the second to her left on
a bullet by senior captain Patty Pytlick (Wellesley,
Mass.) at 80:05.
The Gulls almost pulled out the win with just over four minutes
left in regulation, as Pepin hit a bending shot from the top of the
box. However, Babson junior goalie Lisa Wojnar (Bellaire,
Texas) made a nice one-handed deflection to her right and
then covered the ball to keep the game scoreless.
Pepin finally clinched the win for Endicott midway through the
first overtime period, as she gathered a failed clear at the top of
the box and broke in alone on Wojnar. Babson's junior keeper
made a valiant leaping effort to deflect the ensuing shot, but the
ball glanced off the crossbar and just barely crossed the goal line
to give the Gulls the 1-0 victory. It was the first goal allowed by
Wojnar since taking over as starting keeper back on September 5,
snapping a spring of 564 consecutive scoreless minutes.
Wojnar and Wyrsh each finished with five saves in their
respective nets.
