BABSON PARK, Mass. – Holy Cross took the bottom two
doubles matches and the lower four singles contests to earn a 6-3
road win over host Babson College in non-conference women's
tennis action at the Farwell Courts on Wednesday afternoon. With
the win, the Crusaders improved to 3-6 on the year, while the
Beavers fell to 7-6.
Babson started off strong with a quick 8-3 win by senior captain
Jes Huang (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore
Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) at number one
doubles. However, Holy Cross rallied with an 8-5 win by sophomores
Emily Marr (Jefferson, Mass.) and Emma Rudnik (Lake Bluff, Ill.) at
number two and a 9-8 (4) tie-break victory by seniors Kathryn
Wilkie (Oak Brook, Ill.) and Ivette Konopka (Shelton, Conn.) at
three to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Holy Cross put the match away with straight-set wins in the
bottom three positions, as senior Hailee Lange (Miami, Fla.)
cruised at four, 6-1, 6-2, Konopka earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at
five, and Wilkie prevailed, 6-3, 6-0, at six. Marr pulled out a
three-set win at three, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0, to round out the
Crusaders' scoring, while Huang won in a superbreaker at one,
7-6 (4), 5-7, 1-0 (10-7), and Stone claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at two
to account for Babson's final two points.
