BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College men's basketball team
fell to the United States Coast Guard Academy, 62-55, in a New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's
basketball contest at Staake Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Coast
Guard made a comeback late in the second half to take the lead with
just over seven minutes remaining and never trailed thereafter.
Coast Guard was led by senior Eric Hudson (Pasadena, Calif.),
who tallied 15 points and a team-high five rebounds. Babson was led
by sophomores Matt Florio (Skillman, N.J.) and
Kris Noonan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) who each
finished with 11 points.
With the win, Coast Guard improved to 7-10, 4-3 in the NEWMAC
while the Beavers drop to 9-10, 2-5 in the NEWMAC.
Neither team led by more than five until the final minutes of
the first half, when Babson closed the period with a 14-4 run to
turn an 18-15 deficit into a 29-22 lead at the break. Noonan led
the Beavers with seven points in the opening stanza, while Florio
and first-year Marcus McDermott (Milton,
Mass.) each added six. Junior Brett Huntley (Massena,
N.Y.) netted seven points to pace Coast Guard.
The Beavers kept the momentum coming into the second half and
with their biggest lead coming just over a minute in when a Florio
layup put Babson up 31-24 with 18:45 remaining. Coast Guard then
came within two point on four separate occasions over the next ten
minutes and were able to take a one point lead after capitalizing
on two Babson turnovers, 47-46 with 7:11 left in the game.
First-year Greg Marshall (Gaithersburg, Md.) sank a three-pointer
on Coast Guard's next possession putting the Bears up 50-46 with
5:20 remaining in the game. Babson was able to get it to within two
on the next Beaver possession, 50-48, but were never able to get
any closer. A three-pointer by junior Adam Radtke (Valley City,
Ohio) at the 1:47 mark sealed the deal for the Bears as they went
on to win, 62-55.
For Babson, Florio and Noonan had a team high 11 points
and first-year Marcus McDermott (Milton, Mass.)
finished with 10 points in his return to the court after being out
with an injury for the past four games. Junior Dana Mauro
(Wethersfield, Conn.) finished with a team high five
rebounds for the Beavers and Florio led all players with four
steals. First-year Russell Braithwait (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) added nine points and junior co-captain Matt
Zoia (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in six points.
The Bears were led by Hudson who tallied 15 points and five
rebounds. He was followed by junior Jevon James (St. Thomas, V.I.)
who finished with 11 points. Radtke finished with nine points while
Marshall and Huntley each added seven points in the win.
The Beavers will visit MIT on Wednesday, February 3rd for a 7pm
NEWMAC contest and Coast Guard will travel to Springfield
College for a 5:30pm NEWMAC game.
