NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Babson College improved to 4-0 overall and
2-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
play with a convincing 8-1 victory over host Smith College in
women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers took two
out of three doubles matches and then swept the singles contests en
route to the win.
Senior captain Jes Huang and sophomore
Rebecca Stone highlighted Babson's doubles play
with an 8-2 win at number one, while junior Monica
Mercer and sophomore Ashley Lake notched
an 8-5 win at three. Smith's lone point of the afternoon came at
second doubles, where Alanna Dick and Clair Oblamski edged the
Babson tandem of senior captains Lorena Becerra
and Liz Sheerin, 9-7.
The Beavers took over the contest in singles play, winning all
six matches, including five in straight sets. Huang prevailed at
one, 6-1, 6-4, Stone won at two, 7-5, 7-6 (5), Becerra triumphed at
three, 6-4, 6-2, first-year Mikaela Stamas coasted
at five, 6-1, 6-2, and sophomore Gabriela Baez
cruised at six, 6-1, 6-2. The closest singles match took place at
number four, where Mercer rallied from a set down to win a
three-set battle, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Babson returns to action this Tuesday with a big 3:30 p.m.
NEWMAC showdown with rival MIT, which lost to Mount Holyoke, 5-4,
on Saturday. The Beavers are currently tied for first place in the
conference with Wheaton and Wellesley, all at 2-0, with MIT close
behind at 1-1.
