BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College Beavers and Bates
College Bobcats played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie in a
non-conference women's soccer match at Hartwell-Rogers Field on
Saturday afternoon. With the deadlock, the Beavers move to 5-2-1
overall while the Bobcats are now 1-1-1.
The best chances for both teams came late in the second half,
beginning when Bates first-year striker Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury,
Conn.) got behind the defense and broke free down the left side of
the field with just under 12 minutes left in the period. With a
Babson defender bearing down on her from behind, Flanagan got off a
hard shot from the top of the box, but junior goalie Sarah Macary
(Woodbury, Conn.) came racing out of net and blocked the bid at
point-blank range.
Babson's best scoring opportunity came with a minute and a
half left in regulation, when first-year midfielder Amy Festa
(Medfield, Mass.) found some space in the right corner. The rookie
standout then hit a rocket toward the far side of the net, but
Bates sophomore keeper Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) made a
spectacular leaping save to tip the ball just beyond the left post.
The Beavers mounted a 7-1 shot advantage in the two overtimes,
but Bates sophomore back Amanda Sirianni (Holliston, Mass.) managed
the only shot on net for either side. Her header at the top of the
box off a cross from the left side was easily handled on one hop by
Macary just over six minutes into the first OT. Festa had the best
look for Babson on a free kick just outside the box after a Bates
foul with a minute left in the second overtime, but her shot
attempt sailed just over the cross bar.
Macary finished with three saves for the Beavers, who held a
commanding 27-8 shot advantage in the contest. Babson also received
stellar efforts from its backfield, including several clutch plays
by senior captain Kayla Pomponi (Belmont, Mass.), senior captain
Jacky Mozzicato (Acton, Mass.), and first-year Nichole Vargas
(Warren, R.I.).
Burns was outstanding in goal for Bates, as she finished with
seven saves.
