BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Babson College women's tennis team won 14
of 16 total sets en route to a convincing 8-1 victory over host
Roger Williams University in the first match of the 2009-10 women's
tennis season on Tuesday afternoon.
Babson opened with a sweep of doubles play, headed up by an 8-6
win by senior captains Jes Huang and
Lorena Becerra at number one. Fellow senior
captain Liz Sheerin teamed with sophomore
Rebecca Stone on an 8-2 victory at two, and junior
Monica Mercer and sophomore Ashley
Lake combined on an 8-3 triumph at three.
The Beavers continued to roll in singles play, winning five of
six matches to clinch the overall victory. Posting wins for the
Green and White were Huang at one, Stone at two, first-year
Mikaela Stamas at three, Lake at five, and
sophomore Gabriela Baez at six. Roger Williams'
lone point came at number four, where sophomore Amanda Wolfe edged
out Babson first-year Victoria Lorido in a
third-set superbreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Babson will now enjoy a week off before returning to action with
a 4:15 p.m. contest at Simmons next Tuesday.
