BABSON PARK, Mass. - Host Babson College used an 11-0 run late
in regulation to pull away from visiting MIT on Wednesday night, as
the Beavers defeated the Engineers, 56-44, in a New England Women's
and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at Staake Gymnasium.
With its fifth straight victory, Babson improved to 15-7 overall
and 8-2 in the conference, while MIT slipped to 4-16 overall and
0-10 in the NEWMAC.
Leading the Beavers once again was the first-year duo of
Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.) and
Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.). King scored a
game-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and an
8-of-10 clip from the line, while Wurdeman notched her seventh
double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Renay Hamilton (Lynn, Mass.) added
team-highs of five assists and four steals for Babson, and
first-year Michelle Kenel (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.)
chipped in with six points and three steals off the bench.
MIT received 11 points apiece from first-years Jamie Simmons
(Carlsbad, Calif.) and Hannah Sparkman (Tenafly, N.J.), as well as
nine points from senior Amy Marshall (San Marcos, Texas). Senior
Cherly Kwinn (Monroe, N.Y.) contributed four points, eight
rebounds, and three steals, and senior Alice Yeh (Bellevue, Wash.)
tossed in six points for the Engineers.
MIT played well in the first half, using a tough zone defense to
limit King and Wurdeman to just 10 total points en route to a 25-22
halftime advantage. Marshall scored all nine of her points for the
visitors in the opening stanza, while Simmons netted eight.
The Engineers extended their lead to five, 29-24, early in the
second half before Babson rallied to go up seven, 41-34, with 7:45
remaining. MIT once again battled back to eventually tie the game
at 42-42 with 5:29 left to play, but Babson move in front to stay
with an 11-0 spurt over the next four minutes. King scored six
points during the decisive run, which gave the Beavers a 53-42 lead
with 1:16 to play. The Engineers would get no closer than nine the
rest of the way as Babson came away with the 56-44 victory.
