BOSTON, Mass. -- Four different players scored in double figures
as the Babson College men's basketball team defeated host Emerson
College, 77-69, on Tuesday night. With the win, the Beavers
improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Lions dipped to 1-2.
Sophomore Matt Florio paced Babson's balanced
scoring attack with 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and
a 6-of-6 clip from the free throw line. Florio also hit 2-of-3 from
beyond the three-point arc while adding a career-high nine steals
and five rebounds.
First-year Marcus McDermott and sophomore
Kris Noonan each added 15 points in the win, with
Noonan shooting 6-for-9 from the floor and grabbing six rebounds.
First-year Russell Braithwaite was the Beavers'
fourth double-digit scorer, netting 10 points and grabbing five
boards, and fellow rookie Alex Rudolph chipped in
with nine points and five caroms. Sophomore Marcus
Edwards was the game's high rebounder with seven and
junior co-captain Matt Zoia contributed three
steals off the bench.
Emerson received 21 points and five assists from Bryan Rouse, as
well as 17 points from Dan Boylan and 16 points from Carlos
Negrete.
The two teams played evenly in the first half, which featured five
ties and nine lead changes. The Beavers eventually scored six of
the final eight points of the session to take a 37-33 lead into the
break.
Babson never relinquished the lead in the second half, although
Emerson remained in striking distance for most of the period. The
Lions cut their deficit all the way to one after a Nathan Firm
lay-up made it 62-61 with 5:29 remaining, but the Beavers answered
with a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half to put their
advantage to 69-61. Emerson would get back to within five twice in
the final four minutes, but the Beavers held on for the eventual
77-69 victory.
