HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Babson College men's basketball team
defeated King's College of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon at
the Stevens Institute of Technology Tip-Off Tournament, 74-66.
Leading the way for the Beavers were sophomore Marcus
Edwards (East Hampton, N.Y.) with 20 points and first-year
guard Marcus McDermott (Milton, Mass.) with 13
points. With the win, the Beavers improve their overall record to
2-0 on the season and the Monarchs of King's College drop to 0-3 on
the season. The Beavers will take on host Stevens Institute of
Technology on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
Leading the Beavers for the second straight game was Edwards who
finished with 20 points, five rebounds and four steals. He was
followed by first-year McDermott who finished with 13 points, five
rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore guard Matt
Florio (Skillman, N.J.) also contributed four helpers and
eight points in the win. Coming off the bench to add eight
points each were junior Shelton Ladson (New York,
N.Y.) and first-year Alex Rudolph (Bal Harbour
Fla.).
King's scored the first basket of the game which ended up being
their only lead of the contest. The Monarchs were able to tie it up
on two separate occasions in the beginning of the half, but the
Beavers took the lead for good with 13:33 remaining with the 14-12
lead. Babson went on to score eight unanswered points to make the
score 22-12 with 11:49 left in the first half when Ladson hit one
of his two three pointers of the game. In the remaining
minutes, the Beavers were up by as many as twelve points and were
able to enter halftime leading 41-30.
King's came out strong to start the second half scoring the
first four points of the period bringing them to within seven,
41-34, to start the half. A back and forth rally brought the
Monarchs back to within striking distance as they kept the score to
within seven points for 14 minutes. A three pointer by King's
Mike Wagner tied the game at 59-59 with 4:48 left in the game. Two
big layups by Rudolph as well as shooting 6-6 from the foul line in
the final 1:10 gave the Beavers the lead for good resulting in the
74-66 victory.
