NEW LONDON, CONN. -- Senior Zach Etten (Hollis,
N.H.) battled back from illness to hit the
game-winning jumper with 2.9 seconds left as
Babson College earned its first conference win of the season and
snapped a six-game slide with a 60-58 win at Coast Guard in a New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on
Wednesday night.
Coast Guard (8-9, 1-5), which trailed by as many as 12 points at
21-9 with 8:22 left in the first half, took its first lead of the
game on a pair of free throws by freshman Theo Jensen with 11:37
left in the game, 43-41.
The Bears pushed the lead to six at 54-48 on a three-pointer by
Jensen with 6:13 left before Babson scored six straight and tied
the game 54-54 on a basket by freshman Marcus Edwards (East
Hampton, N.Y.) with 4:04 left.
Coast Guard led 58-56 following a pair of free throws by Jensen
with 1:34 left before freshman Kris Noonan (Boothbay
Harbor, Maine) tied the game on a hoop with 1:03
left.
The Bears missed a front end of a one-and-one with 24.1 seconds
left and then missed a follow-up shot in the paint before
sophomore Shelton Ladson (New York,
N.Y.) grabbed the rebound for Babson. The Beavers
later called timeout with 14.8 seconds remaining to set up Etten's
game winning shot.
Noonan led Babson (9-9, 1-5) with 14 points to go with his six
rebounds while Ladson added 11 points and Edwards collected a
team-high seven rebounds. Etten contributed a heroic performance
off the bench for the Beavers, hitting all three of his field goal
attempts, including a three-pointer, and both of his free throws
for nine points in just 14 minutes of play.
It was the second game-winning jumper of the season for the senior
captain, who knocked down the decisive shot in a season-opening
90-88 overtime victory at Tufts.
Senior Craig Johnson led Coast Guard with 17 points and 11
rebounds while Jensen had 11 points and junior Eric Hudson added 10
points. Sophomore Jevon James had a career-high five blocks to go
with his nine rebounds.
Babson, which led 32-27 at halftime, was 23 for 56 from the
floor (41.1 percent) while connecting on five of 11 from 3-point
range.
Coast Guard shot 38.9 percent from the floor (21-54) while
making seven of 20 from behind the arc.
