CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - An efficient shooting performance coupled
with three players reaching double-digits in scoring helped propel
visiting Babson College to a 73-38 victory over MIT in a New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's
basketball game on Saturday. First-year Nicole
Wurdeman posted 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the
floor as the Beavers (9-6, 2-1 NEWMAC) compiled a 48.4 field goal
percentage. Clara Yuan and Kristen Whaley both totaled 10 points
for the Engineers (4-9, 0-3 NEWMAC).
Babson established a 15-6 lead five minutes into the contest. On
MIT's ensuing possession, Yuan hit a jumper and then grabbed a
steal which setup a three-pointer by Sally Simpson that trimmed the
deficit to four (15-11). The Cardinal and Gray stayed within
striking distance for most of the frame despite the Beavers
extending their margin to double-digits on three occasions. A pair
of free throws by Cheryl Kwinn brought the Engineers within eight
(29-21) at the 5:24 mark. Babson responded by closing out the half
with a 10-4 run, resulting in a 39-25 advantage at the
intermission.
Each side traded baskets to start the second stanza before the
Beavers rattled off 17 straight points to take a commanding 58-27
lead with 10:18 on the clock. A free throw by Jamie Simmons ended
MIT's nine-minute scoring drought, but it would not be enough to
ignite a late rally as Babson maintained control of the game.
Whaley and Kwinn each grabbed six rebounds while Simpson notched
seven points. Alice Yeh bolstered the Engineers' attack with six
points as Simmons totaled two assists and two steals.
First-year Kathleen King had a solid outing for
the Beavers, tallying 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and
two steals. Sophomore Becky Bowman registered 15
points, five assists, and three steals while first-year
Michelle Kenel contributed nine points and five
boards. First-year Kelly McKenna added eight
rebounds coming off the bench.
Both squads will continue NEWMAC action at home on Wednesday,
Jan. 21. MIT will host WPI while Babson will take on Wellesley
College.
