SALEM, Mass. -- The Babson College women's basketball team shot
just 1-for-6 with four turnovers in the overtime session as the
Beavers suffered a tough 77-73 road defeat at Salem State College
in a non-conference tilt on Monday night. It was the second
straight loss for Babson, which fell to 4-3, while the Vikings
evened their overall record at 3-3.
The poor showing in the extra period spoiled a tremendous
comeback by the Beavers, who rallied from 10 points down with less
than five minutes to go in regulation. First-year Kathleen
King paced Babson with 20 points and nine rebounds, while
sophomore Becky Bowman also scored 20. Junior
Sarah Hughes contributed 10 points and four
rebounds off the bench, and first-year Nicole
Wurdeman pulled down a game-high 12 boards.
Salem State received double-doubles from Manise Louinord, who
scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Danielle Jenkins, who
netted 21 points to go with 10 caroms. Amy Barry and Katie Bielonko
added 15 and 14 points, respectively for the Vikings, and Jakoya
Wilkins chipped in with six points, seven assists, and five steals.
Ths hosts forced 34 Babson turnovers while committing just 18 of
their own.
The Beavers came out firing early on, building a 22-12 lead
after a lay-up by senior co-captain Becky
Pelletier with 8:48 left in the first half. However, Salem
State staged a furious rally in the closing minutes of the period,
as the two squads eventually went into the break knotted at 30-30.
In a near mirror image of the first half, Salem State led for
most of the second period of play, including a 68-58 cushion with
4:58 on the clock. Babson rallied behind King and Bowman, who
combined to scored eight straight points over the next four minutes
to pull the visitors within two. Sophomore Renay Hamilton then
capped off the Beavers' game-tying 10-0 run with a steal and lay-up
with 36 seconds left, and the Vikings came up empty on their final
possession as the contest went into overtime knotted at 68-68.
Following a lay-up by Louinord and a free throw by Wurdeman,
King hit a jumper to give Babson a 71-70 lead one minute into the
extra session. However, that would prove to be the Beavers' final
field goal as Salem State scored seven of the game's final nine
points to claim the 77-73 victory.
