BABSON PARK, Mass. - First-years Nicole Wurdeman
(Rowley, Mass.) and Kathleen King (Framingham,
Mass.) combined for 42 points and 26 rebounds in leading
the host Babson College Beavers to a convincing 87-61 victory over
visiting Connecticut College in the consolation game of the sixth
annual Babson Invitational Tournament presented by Irving Oil on
Saturday afternoon. With the win, Babson improved 1-1, while the
camels dropped to 0-3.
Wurdeman had a monster game in the paint for Babson, hitting
10-of-13 from the floor for 24 points while also adding 16
rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots. King also posted
a double-double for the Beavers, finishing with 18 points on
7-of-13 shooting to go with 10 boards. First-year Kelly
McKenna (Shrewsbury, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and
six rebounds off the Babson bench, sophomore Becky Bowman
(Melrose, Mass.) contributed 10 points, and sophomore
Amanda Grammel (Leominster, Mass.) added six
points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Babson posted
an spectacular 57-28 advantage on the glass, including 19 offensive
rebounds that led to 22 second-chance points.
Connecticut College received 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from
junior Jacquelyn DeFeo (Stratford, Conn.) as well as 10 points from
junior Emily Cummings (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). First-year Pinky
Fifield (Warner, N.H.) chipped in with eight points off the bench
and junior Amy Towne (Stamford, Conn.) amassed seven points, four
rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Babson used a pair of 12-2 runs in the first half to build a
comfortable lead - the first in the opening four minutes that gave
the Beavers a 16-4 advantage and another midway through the period
that resulted in a 30-14 cushion. Babson would eventually take a
commanding 48-28 lead into the break thanks to 16 points and 15
first-half boards from Wurdeman, and Connecticut College would not
get closer than 16 the rest of the way as the Beavers came away
with the 87-61 victory.
