WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -
The Williams College women's basketball team (9-3) capped off a dominant weekend on the court with an impressive 72-49 victory over visiting Babson College (3-7) in the championship game of the Eph's own Winter Classic Tournament on Saturday afternoon. It was the third straight Classic crown for the Ephs and their sixth time in seven years.
The game remained tight for the first ten minutes of play before Williams began to pull away with an 11-2 run that featured three-pointers by Chessie Jackson, Mika Peterman, and Niki Savageau. That gave the Ephs a 25-13 lead with 10:14 left in the first half. Babson would eventually get back to within three (29-26) thanks to a strong 28-22 rebounding advantage in the opening frame, but the Ephs closed the period with a 9-0 run to take a 38-26 edge into the break.
Williams' defense was stifling in the second stanza, as the hosts held the Beavers to just three points in the opening ten minutes of the period. Meanwhile, Jessica Harris scored four consecutive buckets and grabbed four rebounds off the bench as Williams surged out to a commanding lead en route to the 72-49 victory.
Jackson finished the game with 13 points, while Peterman added a game-high 14 points while shooting 3-for-5 from three-point range. Savageau was named the Tournament MVP, scoring 11 points and grabbing six boards, while Harris finished the game with 12 points and six caroms.
Along with Savageau, Taylor Shea was named to the All-Tournament team for Williams. They were joined by Babson co-captains Nicole McManus and Caitlin Boulier. McManus notched her second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds while also posting three steals and four blocks, and Boulier finished the game with seven points after netting a team-high 16 on Friday. Senior Caitlin Fenn and rookie Rebecca Bowman also scored seven points each for the Beavers, while senior Linsey Poulson contributed six points and nine rebounds.
