NEWBURY, N.H. - The Babson College alpine ski teams kicked off their 2008 campaign with a strong showing on the first day of the Colby-Sawyer Carnival at Mount Sunapee on Friday. Competing in the first of two giant slalom events, the men placed fifth out of nine teams and the women took seventh out of 10 squads.

Posting the top finish for both teams was first-year Alexis Burton (Salt Lake City, Utah), who began her collegiate career with a spectacular sixth-place performance. She was joined in the top 20 by classmate Alyssa Sullivan, who also enjoyed a stellar debut by finishing 18th overall. Senior captain Jess Cohen (Pittsford, N.Y.) followed in 57th place for the women's team, followed by first-year Catherine Mills (Pittsford, N.Y.) in 65th, Victoria Tanous (Auburn, Maine) in 71st, and sophomore Tahira Adatia (Tacoma, Wash.) in 75th.

Fueling the men's strong opening was the duo of junior co-captains Kevin Fusick (North Granby, Conn.) and John Roche (Hingham, Mass.), who finished 12th and 15th, respectively. First-year Max Winthrop (Avon, Conn.) added a solid collegiate debut with a 27th-place effort, followed by sophomore Chris Jacobs (Rochester, N.Y.) in 34th, first-year Keith Vella (Sussex, N.J.) in 37th, and first-year Enrico Palmerino in 67th.
