WELLESLEY, Mass. -
Senior Suzy Ward (North Attleboro, Mass.) became the 11th player in Babson College women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points as she led the Beavers to an 82-60 victory over host Wellesley College in a NEWMAC matchup on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Babson improved to 11-11 overall and 7-4 in the conference, while Wellesley dipped to 4-17 overall and 1-10 in the NEWMAC.
Needing just six points to reach 1,000, Ward scored her first two on a jumper six minutes into the first half. She then hit another jumper on the Beavers' first possession of the second half, and the milestone hoop came three minutes later when she converted a jumper off a feed from junior Caitlin Boulier (Wolcott, Conn.) with 16:10 remaining in the game. Ward finished the game with 16 points to give her 1,010 in her career, moving her into a tie for ninth place on Babson's all-time scoring list.
Also playing well for Babson first-year Sam Bartman (Upton, Mass.) and sophomore Becky Pelletier (Harwinton, Conn.), who each recorded career highs in the victory. Bartman led the Beavers with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, while Pelletier added 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field to go along with three steals.
Babson also received 10 points from junior Linsey Poulson (Leominster, Mass.), seven rebounds from junior Nicole McManus (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), and nine points, five boards, and four assists from Boulier.
Leading 17-13 midway through the first half, the Beavers took control of the game with an 18-0 run that was capped by eight straight points by Bartman. Babson later went up by as many as 33 points on two Bartman free throws with 9:50 left in the second half en route to the easy 82-60 win.
