Babson College shot 61.2 percent while holding Clark University to a 36.1 percent clip as the Beavers defeated the Cougars, 73-63, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball contest at Staake Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. It was the ninth win in the last 12 games for Babson (15-8 overall, 8-2 NEWMAC), which remained in second place in the league standings. Meanwhile, Clark (9-13 overall, 3-7 NEWMAC)) saw its two-game conference win streak come to a halt.
Senior co-captain Brandon Eigenberg (Milford, Conn.) had a magnificent all-around game for Babson, as he finished with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and four steals. Sophomore Zach Etten (Hollis, N.H.) added a game-high 17 points while matching Eigenberg with four steals, and junior Greg Bush (East Islip, N.Y.) tossed in 12 points to go along with five boards.
First-year Mark Alexander (Providence, R.I.) paced Clark with 16 points, five assists, and three steals, while junior Dominique Beck (Brockton, Mass.) added 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Babson never trailed in the contest, building an early 12-2 lead behind six early points from Etten. Clark eventually go back to within one, 20-19, on a three-pointer by junior Godfrey Duncan (Dorchester, Mass.) with 7:30 left in the opening period, and the Cougars later entered the half trailing by just two, 34-32.
Clark stayed close through the first eight minutes of the second stanza before the Beavers pushed their lead to 10 with a 6-0 run that was capped by a jumper from junior Chris Bradley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) with 9:42 remaining. The Cougars made one final surge when junior Pat Ochoa (Springfield, Mass.) knocked down a three to cut his team's deficit to five, 61-56, with 3:48 left to play, but Babson responded with a 12-3 run that put the game away.
Also playing well in the win for the Beavers were Bradley, who finished with 10 points, including nine in the second half, and junior Brian MacDonald (Beverly, Mass.), who tallied nine points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
GAME NOTES: Etten shot 6-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-5 from three-point range. He is now leads the league with a 53.2 percent (50-for-94) clip from beyond the arc this season... Prior to the game, there was a brief ceremony in honor of Eigenberg and fellow senior co-captain Brian Parsons (Queensbury, N.Y.) as part of Babsons' Senior Day tradition.
