The Babson College women's basketball team outscored visiting Wellesley College, 45-15, in the second half to claim a 68-38 victory over the Blue in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Thursday night. The Beavers upped their record to 6-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while Wellesley dipped to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.
Junior Caitlin Boulier (Wolcott, Conn.) led Babson with 16 points, including 10 in the decisive second half, while first-year Sam Bartman (Upton, Mass.) finished with a career-high 11 points, all of which came in the second frame. Senior co-captain Colleen Burke (Pittsfield, Mass.) continued to strong play with eight points and six rebounds, senior Suzy Ward (North Attleboro, Mass.) tallied seven points and eight boards, and first-year Jill Walsh (Merrimack, N.H.) dished out a team-high three assists.
Sophomore Courtney Richter (Singing Spring, Pa.) was outstanding in defeat for Wellesley, matching Boulier's game-high with 16 points while also leading all players with nine rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Duff (Milton Abingdon, United Kingdom) chipped in with 12 points and seven boards for the Blue, who were hampered by 27 turnovers in the contest.
The two teams played evenly through the first 20 minutes, as the crosstown rivals headed into the locker room tied at 23-23. However, Babson exploded out of the gates in the second half, scoring 11 unanswered points in the first four minutes to take a 34-23 lead. Boulier netted five points during the run, while Burke added four.
Wellesley twice pulled back to within nine on baskets by Richter, but an 11-2 run later in the period pushed Babson's advantage to 18 at 48-30. The Beavers continued to add to their lead until the final buzzer, as they eventually came away with the 68-38 victory.
