No. 20 Men's Golf Begins NCAA Division III Championship on Tuesday Morning

WHAT TO KNOW

•    The 20th-ranked Babson men's golf team will make its first NCAA Division III Championship appearance since 2022 after earning one of nine at-large bids last Monday. 
•    The Beavers are one of 43 programs vying for this year's national championship at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., outside Orlando.
•    The 72-hole stroke-play championship begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning and will be reduced to the low 18 teams for the final 36 holes following the completion of second-round play on Wednesday afternoon.

TEE TIMES
•    Babson will tee off on the Las Colinas course at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday. 
•    Wednesday's tee times on the El Campeon course have not been announced yet. 

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS HISTORY
•    The El Campeon (par 72, 6,748 yards) and Las Colinas (par 71, 6,792 yards) courses at Mission Inn and Resort are set to host the NCAA Division III Championship for the fifth time after previously serving as the tournament venue in 2005, 2012, 2017 and 2022.
•    Guilford won the 2005 title at 22-over, Oglethorpe claimed the 2012 championship at 19-over, Wittenberg was victorious with a 72-hole score of 28-over in 2017 and Methodist finished first in 2022 at 16-over.  
•    Babson has appeared in the NCAA Championship three times when it has been hosted at Mission Inn and Resort tying for 38th place 2012, placing 25th in 2017 and tying for 12th after making the 36-hole cut in 2022. 

2022 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
•    Babson ended a historic season by recording its highest finish (T-12) with a score of  63-over 1,211 at the 2022 NCAA Division III Championship at Mission Inn Resort and Club. 
•    Jackson Rothwell tied for 13th position at 7-over, Nicholas Gianelos '22 finished in a tie for 36th place at 14-over and Burt Gesner '22 tied for 45th overall at 18-over for the Beavers, who posted their lowest score of the tournament in the final round (298) while becoming just the third New England program to make the 36-hole cut since 2017. 

ABOUT THE BEAVERS
•    Babson was one of nine teams to receive an at-large berth into this year's championship following a strong finish that included winning the Farmingdale State Invitational to close the regular season back on April 18-19. 
•    Senior Colin Fowler shot 69-71 and sophomore Howie Poon carded rounds of 66-74 to tie for third place at even-par, while fellow sophomores Chad Tordone (65-77) and Aman Vantipalli (68-74) tied for 13th at 2-over for the Beavers, who posted a 36-hole score of 5-over 565 to finish three strokes clear of second-place Amherst on the Red Course at Bethpage State Park.
•    Vantipalli has finished under par four times this season and owns four top-15 results to go along with a 73.22 stroke average, senior Shane Quinn (73.93) closed the regular season with back-to-back top-25 finishes and junior Jack Berry leads the team with seven rounds under par and boasts a 73.96 stroke average in 23 rounds. 
•    Fowler (74.39) has recorded five top-20 finishes, while Tordone has three top-40 showings in eight starts and owns a 75.83 stroke average. 
•    Babson owns a team scoring average of 293.74 and has posted a score of 292 or better in seven of its last nine rounds. 

BABSON IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
•    The Beavers are set to compete in their 11th Division III Championship and are making their 12th national tournament appearance overall.
•    Babson finished a program-best 10th at the 1972 Division II Championship and owns three top-15 finishes in the Division III Tournament placing 13th in 1982 and 15th in 2001 in addition to its tie for 12th in 2022.
•    The Green and White shot 302 on the Las Colinas course to begin the 2022 tournament before posting rounds of 304-307-298 over the final three days on the El Campeon course. 

GOING OUT ON TOP
•    Head coach Jeff Page, who is now in his 13th season has the Beavers back in the NCAA Championship for the fifth time since 2015.  
•    A four-time CGAA Region I Coach of the Year, Page announced his retirement as head coach back in December after overseeing the most successful stretch in program history. 
•    In addition to five NCAA appearances, his players have earned 11 All-America and 29 All-region awards while accounting for the 12 best career scoring averages and the top 25 single-season stroke averages in program history. 

 BY THE NUMBERS
•    The Beavers have recorded 12 individual rounds in the 60s and have had six players combine for 20 rounds under par, which includes seven by Berry and four apiece by Fowler and Vantipalli. 
•    The 36-hole cut came at 619 in 2017 and 616 in 2022 at Mission Inn Resort and Club. 
•    Babson's four-round score of 1,211 back in 2022 was its best in 10 appearances at the NCAA Division III Championship. 

BEAVER BITES
•    Tordone (65) and Poon (66) both posted the low score of their respective careers in the opening round of the Farmingdale State Invitational on the Red Course at Bethpage State Park back on April 18. 
•    Berry has shot 68 three times on the year with the last coming in the final round of the Sam Snead Collegiate on April 14 in Williamsburg, Va. 
•    Vantipalli boasts a 71.78 stroke average over his last nine rounds dating back to the start of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on March 20. 
•    Quinn enters this week's NCAA Championship ranked sixth in program history with a 74.84 stroke average in 49 career rounds and boasts a 72.44 average over his last nine starts this spring. 
•    Fowler has improved his scoring average in each of the last three seasons and owns a 75.58 career average in 55 rounds, which ranks 10th in program history.
