NEW LONDON, Conn.— Graduate student
Skyler Mott (Mills Neck, N.Y.) and first-year
Cameron Mehallo (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) captured individual championships to lead Babson College to a fourth-place finish at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's track & field championships on Saturday at the Coast Guard Academy's Nitchman Track.
The Beavers finished in fourth place with 87 points, the second-most in program history. MIT captures its 24th NEWMAC team title with 253 points, last year's champion WPI finished runner-up with 202, and Springfield was third with 125.
Mott posted a pair of top four finishes for the Beavers, highlighted by his championship in the high jump by clearing 6-feet, 7-inches. He also finished in fourth place in the triple jump with a mark of 45-feet, 10.5-inches. He owns the program records in both events with a 6-feet, 9.75 inch performance in the high jump and 46-feet, 2.75-inches in the triple jump, both set last month at the season-opening meet in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Mehallo captured his championship in the 400-meter hurdles with a program record time of 53.85 seconds. He bettered his own record of 54.87 seconds set at the Coast Guard Invitational back on April 4. He was one of four Beavers who finished in the top 10 in the event as sophomore
Jackson Adams (Norwell, Mass.) was fourth in 54.52, first-year
Brady Kirtland (San Diego, Calif.) was seventh in 56.50, and sophomore
Aithan Bezanson (Danvers, Mass.) came in 10th in a season-best 56.89.
The Beavers had strong performances in both relay races. The group of sophomores
Dominic Smith (Aspen, Colo.) and
Noa Wong (Kaneohe, Hawaii) along with Mehallo and Adams placed third in the 4x400-meter relay in a season-best time of 3:20.16, which is the fourth-fastest in program history. The contingent of Smith, junior
Chris McDonough (North Andover, Mass.), Adams and Mehallo finished fourth in the 4x100-meter relay in a time of 43.88 seconds.
Other top performances for the Beavers included Kirtland placing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.98 seconds after setting a program record of 14.86 in Friday's preliminaries. McDonough finished in fifth place in the 100-meter dash in 10.91 seconds and achieved a New England regional qualifying time of 22.50 while placing 11th in the 200 yard dash.
Sophomore
Nick Yacoub (Sharon, Mass.) and junior
Brian Gall (Norwalk, Conn.) had top-10 showings in the 5000 meters, Yacoub finishing fifth in a time of 15:04.80 and Gall eighth in a provisional regional qualifying time of 15:29.15. Sophomore
Brian Ronayne (Reading, Mass.) was eighth in the 1500 meters in 4:04.59, and Wong was eighth in the 400 meters in 50.32 seconds.
Babson's best finish in the throws was an eighth place by junior
Coleman Hayes (New York, N.Y. ) in the shot put with a mark of 43-feet, 7.75-inches.
Babson will send its top performers to the Division III New England Championships next Friday and Saturday at Springfield College.
