PINEHURST, N.C.—Junior
Jack Berry (Western Springs, Ill.) fired a 2-under 70 in his second round of the day to move into 10th place and the Babson College men's golf team sits in 14th position after 36 holes in the Tiger Invitational at Forest Creek Golf Club on Monday.
The Beavers opened the day with an 11-over 299 and were two strokes better as a team in the afternoon round to post a 36-hole total of 20-over 596. No. 9 Methodist leads three teams under par at 9-under 567, No. 1 Huntingdon is second at 6-under and third-ranked Carnegie Mellon ended the day in third place at 2-under. No. 2 Emory (1-over) and Lynchburg (2-over) sit in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in a field that features 11 of the top 19 teams in the latest Bushnell Golfweek Division III poll.
Berry, who started on the 12th hole, was 2-under over his first 15 holes of round one before making a pair of late bogeys to settle for an opening round 72. He slipped to 1-over for the tournament after making consecutive bogeys at Nos. 1 and 2, but bounced back with three birdies over his final eight holes of the second round to card a 70 that moved him into 10th place at 2-under.
Senior
Shane Quinn (Morristown, N.J.) carded back-to-back rounds of 3-over 75 to finish the day in a tie for 56th place at 6-over. He opened the day with a double bogey and was 4-over through his first five holes before bouncing back by playing the final 31 holes in 2-over while making three birdies and five bogeys.
Sophomore
Aman Vantipalli (Alpharetta, Ga.) is tied for 60th position at 7-over after following up his 3-over 75 in the morning with a 4-over 76 in round two. Classmate
Chad Tordone (Barnstable, Mass.) is tied for 70th place at 9-over after shooting 77-76, while senior
Colin Fowler (Portland, Ore.) rebounded from an opening 82 with a 6-over 78 in the afternoon and is 96th overall at 16-over through 36 holes.
The Beavers will begin final round play at the Tiger Invitational on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
• Berry has finished under-par four times and even-par twice in 13 rounds on the season, and is now under par through 36 holes for the third time in five tournaments.
• Babson owns a 299.0 scoring average in seven rounds over the last four seasons at Forest Creek GC.
• Berry tied for second in par-3 scoring at 2-under on Monday, while Tordone tied eighth at 3-under on the par-5s.
• Sixteen of the 20 teams competing at the Tiger Invitational are either ranked or receiving votes in the Division III poll and ranked among the top 35 in the Scoreboard computer rankings.
