No. 9 Women's Tennis Set to Face Three Highly-Ranked Foes in South Carolina Beginning Sunday

Beavers to Take on No. 2 Wash. U., No. 4 Wesleyan and No. 13 Johns Hopkins

vs. Wash U.: 1-0; No. 35 Babson upset No. 17 Wash U., 5-4, in California in 2023.
vs. Wesleyan: 2-3; first meeting since 2012; Wesleyan won in 2003, 2007, and Spring 2012, Babson in 2008 and Fall 2012.

LAST MEETING
vs. Wash U.

• Olivia Soffer '25 and senior Matia Cristiani were winners in both singles and doubles as No. 35 Babson defeated No. 17 Wash. U., 5-4, on March 23, 2023 in Claremont, Calif. The Beavers won two of the three doubles matches and then captured the top three singles matches to secure the win.
• Juliette Moschella '24 and Elena Keitt won at second doubles for the Green and White, and Kamila Stasiowska posted a win at third singles.
• The duo of Ainsley Heidbreder and senior Nina Moravek won 8-1 at third doubles, and Katherine Johnston, senior Amber Edmonds, and Carolyn Tsung registered wins at the bottom three singles flights for the Bears.
vs. Wesleyan
• Babson had little trouble with the Cardinals in an 8-1 victory in Middletown, Conn., on September 14, 2012, sweeping the doubles and taking five of the six singles matches.
• The Beavers picked up three fast points in double play, with Alex Freeman and Sarah Whitaker teaming up on a win at one, Alexis Ferraro and Tori Paulino securing a triumph at two, and Victoria Lorido and Minte Tamoshunas joining forces at three. Babson then continued to roll in singles play, led by a win at number one by Freeman. Whitaker also cruised at two, Paolino coasted at three, Tamoshunas won at five, and Lorido prevailed at six.
• Wesleyan picked up its lone point of the day on a win by Jess Seidman at number four singles.
vs. Johns Hopkins
• Cristiani and first-year Sandra Sikharulidze won matches in both singles and doubles as No. 14 Babson pulled off a 4-3 upset victory over No. 7 Johns Hopkins on January 31, 2026, in Wellesley.
• Sophomore Sarai Dorismond and first-year Jolie Wang won a key doubles match at number three for the Beavers, and first-year Elizabeth Shu earned a singles win at number three to help secure the team victory.
• Senior Kamila Wong was a two-time winner for the Blue Jays, including a doubles win with sophomore Ava Li, and sophomore Sahana Madala and junior Sydney Langer also posted singles wins in the setback.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• No. 9 Babson (4-0, 1-0 NEWMAC) has won three straight matches over ranked teams, including No. 7 Johns Hopkins (4-3), No. 24 NYU (4-1), and most recently No. 10 Bowdoin (4-3) on March 1 in Brunswick, Maine.
• Cristiani and Sikharulidze won matches in both singles and doubles against the Polar Bears. The Beavers also got a doubles win from Dorismond and Wang at number two to clinch the doubles point, and a three-set triumph at number five singles from sophomore Alessandra Cristiani to secure the team victory.
Matia Cristiani (19-0) is ranked No. 1 in singles in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) after capturing the ITA New England crown in September and the Division III ITA Cup in October. Sikharulidze (9-4) is 3-0 in dual matches at number two, and first-year Tina Liu (8-3) is ranked No. 34 by the ITA after posting an 8-2 record in tournament play in the fall.
• M. Cristiani and Sikharulidze are 18-2 in doubles after capturing the ITA New England doubles crown in the fall and going 3-0 at number one in dual matches this semester. The duo of A. Cristiani and sophomore Mia Sorrentino are 10-2 on the season, and the tandem of junior Dana Kamal and first-year Manuela Moscoso are 7-1.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
• Second-ranked Wash U. (9-1) is coming off a 4-3 victory over No. 4 Wesleyan on Friday in Hilton Head, S.C., just two days after posting its first career victory over No. 5 Emory on Wednesday.
• The Bears won the doubles point against Wesleyan with a sweep, as junior Eleanor Archer and sophomore Caitlin Bui won at number one, sophomore Ally Lin and senior Eliana Hanna were winners at number two, and sophomore Samantha Slowik and first-year Lily Brecknock took the third flight. Wash U closed out the team decision with victories in the top three singles flights by Hanna, Archer and Bui.
• Hanna (15-3), ranked eighth in Division III, is 7-0 at number one singles and Archer (13-2), ranked 17th, is 6-1 at number two. Bui (10-3) is 7-1 at number three, while Lin (9-4) is 5-2 at number four, Edmonds (5-4) is 4-1 in dual matches and Moravek (6-0) is 6-1 in dual matches.
• The tandem of Lin/Hanna (16-3) are ranked 11th in Division III while Archer/Bui (15-4) are ranked seventh and Slowik/Brecknock (11-1) are ranked 18th.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
• Fourth-ranked Wesleyan (4-2) was handed its second loss of the season on Friday with a 4-3 setback to No. 2 Wash U. in Hilton Head, S.C. The Cardinals' two losses have come to the top two ranked teams in Division III to go along with wins over No. 3 Emory, No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer and No. 6 Middlebury.
• After dropping all three doubles matches to Wash U., the Cardinals picked up singles wins in the bottom three flights by sophomore Natalia Leroy and first-years Mariia Kornilova and Kendall Smith.
• Senior Leila Epstein (7-5) is ranked 42nd in Division III and shares the team lead in singles wins with first-years Agnes Guggenheim (7-3) and Kornilova (7-1). Leroy (6-3) and first-year Lara Afolayanka (5-4) are both 4-2 in dual matches.
• The duo of Smith and Afolayanka (6-3) are ranked 13th in Division III in doubles and the tandem of Youngberg and Kornilova (3-1) are ranked 22nd.

SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS
• The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins (0-2) will be looking for their first win of the season when they play for the first time in more than a month on Saturday, hosting No. 24 NYU prior to facing No. 4 Wesleyan on Monday in Hilton Head.
• Junior Lia Melvin and Jay Xiao became just the second Johns Hopkins doubles team to make the championship match of the ITA Cup in October. Madala and first-year Claire Loftus became the third straight Blue Jay doubles team to win the ITA Southeast Regional title, defeating Melvin and Xiao in the championship match.
• Melvin (6-3) is ranked No. 30 in Division III in the ITA singles rankings. Three Blue Jay doubles teams are in the national rankings as Melvin and Xiao (8-3) are No. 2, Loftus and Madala (11-3) are No. 6, and Wong and Li (8-2) are No. 21.
• The Blue Jays advanced to the NCAA Tournament semifinals in 2025 and finished with a 16-8 overall record, then sent Xiao in singles and Wong and Li in doubles to the NCAA singles and doubles championships.

MOVIN' ON UP
• Babson, which began the year at No. 14 in the Division III poll, moved up five spots to No. 9, which matches the highest ranking in program history. 
• The Beavers were also ranked ninth in the final regular season poll of the 2022-23 season.  

CHALLNEGING SPRING SLATE
• Babson's matches in South Carolina are three of the 11 matches this spring against opponents ranked in the top 25 by the ITA.
• In addition to victories over then-No. 7 Johns Hopkins, No. 24 NYU and No. 10 Bowdoin, Babson will play No. 23 Brandeis and No. 20 Williams the first week of April and No. 22 Wellesley, No. 15 Washington & Lee and No. 8 MIT between April 19-25.
• The Beavers are off to a 3-0 start against ranked team this season after finishing 7-7 vs. ranked foes last year and 5-6 in 2023-24.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
Matia Cristiani has rewritten the Babson women's tennis record books with the start to another outstanding season.
• Cristiani (99-4) has tied Olivia Soffer (99-15) for career singles victories, and surpassed Soffer (97-21) with her 101 career doubles wins (101-10).
• Matia registered her incredible 200th career combined victory (200-14) with a pair of wins against Bowdoin back on March 1. She also owns the single season mark of 61 combined wins in 2023-24 and shares the single-season doubles mark with Soffer (32 in 2023-24).

NUMBERS TO KNOW
• Babson is 18-2 going back to the start of last season when winning the doubles point. 
• The Green and White has won 24 consecutive matches at number one singles and 19 in a row at number two singles dating back to last year.

UP NEXT
• Following the three matches in South Carolina, the Beavers will play New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition at Smith on March 27 in Northampton, Mass.
