Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and first-year
Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) won matches in both singles and doubles as No. 9 Babson College eeked out a tight victory over No. 10 Bowdoin College, 4-3, in a battle of top-10 women's tennis programs Sunday afternoon at the Pickard Tennis Courts.
The Beavers won their third straight match and improved to 4-0 on the season while Bowdoin dropped its first dual match of the season to start the campaign at 0-1.
It was also a big day for Cristiani, who registered her program-record 200th career overall win and tied former teammate
Olivia Soffer '25 for the most singles wins in program history with 99. Cristiani ends the weekend with a 99-4 career singles mark and a 101-10 record in doubles.
The Beavers also got a doubles win from sophomore
Sarai Dorismond (Carlsbad, Calif.) and first-year
Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) to clinch the doubles point, and a singles triumph from sophomore
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) in the team victory.
Matia Cristiani and Sikharulidze, who are ranked ninth in Division III and No. 1 in the Northeast region, began the day with a 6-3 victory at number one doubles over junior Zoe Sun and sophomore Bella Hartung, who are ranked No. 10 in the Northeast. Dorismond and Wang gave Babson the doubles point with a 6-2 triumph over senior Cara Hung and sophomore Suzanne Pogorelec at number two before Bowdoin junior Caroline Stuhlfaut and first-year Naomi Williams rounded out the doubles with a 6-4 victory over
Alessandra Cristiani and junior
Danal Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) at number three.
Matia Cristiani, who is No. 1 in the ITA Division III rankings, opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Hung in the top flight. Sikharulidze rallied from a set down to defeat Pogorelec at number two, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Bowdoin posted a pair of victories in the middle two flights as Sun outlasted Dorismond 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-8), and Hartung rallied for a three-set win over Wan, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-4.
Alessandra Cristiani battled back from dropping the first set to defeat Stuhlfaut at number five, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, and Bowdoin junior Julia Ross edged sophomore
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) at number six, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
Babson returns to action with three matches against top-10 teams during the team's spring break in Hilton Head, S.C., beginning with No. 1 Washington University of St. Louis on March 15. Bowdoin travels to No. 14 Amherst next Saturday for its conference opener.
