BRUNSWICK, Maine —Sophomores
Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) and
Elizabeth Shu (Sugar Land, Texas) advanced to the third round in both singles and doubles, and seven different players recorded at least one victory to highlight a number of strong performances on Friday for the Babson women's tennis team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships.
The top seed in the A singles draw, Sikharulidze defeated Heidi Cambron of Smith in the first round, 6-2, 6-3, before rallying for a 6-7, (5-7), 6-4, (10-4) victory over Ella Novion of Colby in the second round. Shu, who is seeded in the 9-16 range, breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ava Terefe of Trinity in the opening round before an easy 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Sophie Buttorff of Wellesley in the round of 32.
The top seed in the doubles bracket, Sikharulidze and Shu received a first-round bye and blanked Vani Chitale and Chahana Budhbhatti of Brandeis, 8-0, to advance to Saturday's third round.
Junior
Sarai Dorismond (Carlsbad, Calif.) and sophomore
Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) also advanced to the third round of the doubles draw. Seeded in the 9-16 range, the Babson duo received a first-round bye before downing Natalia Leroy and Naomi Williams of Bowdoin in the second round, 8-7 (7-5).
First-years
Te'Anna Mata (Naples, Fla.) and
Vanessa Vu (Boston, Mass.) outlasted teammates senior
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and first-year
Nanami Sheskier (New York, N.Y.), 8-7, (7-5), in the first round of doubles before falling to sixth-seeded Caroline Stuhlfaut and Zoe Sun of Bowdoin, 8-4, in the second round.
Mata and Wang were first-round winners in the A singles draw for Babson. Mata rallied past Chloe Zeng of MIT, 5-7, 6-3, (10-8), before falling to seventh-seeded Sophie Buttorff of Wellesley in the second round, 3-6, 7-6, (11-9), while Wang got past Maya Kowalska of Connecticut College, 6-0, 7-6, but fell to Kayla Mitchell of Wesleyan, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 32.
Dorismond and Moscoso won their first-round matches in the B singles draw on Friday and will play in the round of 32 on Saturday. Dorismond, the fourth seed, was an 8-2 winner over Nicolette Baksay of Connecticut College and Moscoso downed Naisha Rathi of Trinity, 8-0.
Doubles play will get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday, while singles action will begin at approximately 12 p.m.
