Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Senior Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) won back-to-back matches to capture the singles title and paired with first-year Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) for consecutive victories to claim the doubles crown as Babson College swept the championship awards Sunday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships hosted by Middlebury College.

The top seed in the A singles draw, Cristiani downed Saina Deshpande of MIT, 6-3, 6-4, in a semifinal match before posting a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Fiona Lee of MIT in the final. That came after Cristiani and Sikharulidze, seeded third in the doubles bracket, rolled to an 8-2 victory seventh-seeded Sarah Youngberg and Mariia Kornilova of Wesleyan in the semifinals before pulling out the title with a 6-2, 6-3 verdict over Lara Afolayanka and Kendall Smith of Wesleyan in the final.

With Sunday's victories, Cristiani and Sikharulidze qualify for the Division III ITA Cup held in Rome, Ga., from October 16-19. Cristiani will compete in singles and the duo also will take part in doubles. 

Cristiani captured her second ITA New England Championship in doubles after winning with former teammate Olivia Soffer '25 in 2023, and she collected her second singles crown after winning in 2023. Babson has won three of the last four singles titles as Soffer took the 2022 championship.

Cristiani is also up to 90 singles, 94 doubles and 184 combined wins in her career and is 10-0 this year in singles and 11-0 on the season in doubles.

Babson returns to action on October 11-12 when it competes in the Bowdoin Invitational in Brunswick, Maine.
