MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Senior
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) stayed alive with a pair of victories in both singles and doubles Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships hosted by Middlebury College.
The top seed in the A singles draw, Cristiani breezed past Katie Driscoll of MIT in a third-round singles match, 6-0, 6-0, and needed three sets to defeat seventh-seeded Elsie Van Wieren of Middlebury in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. She will meet Saina Deshpande of MIT in a semifinal match on Sunday.
Seeded third in the doubles bracket, Cristiani paired up with first-year
Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) earlier in the day for a third-round victory over Karolina Dobiecka and Tina She of Amherst, 8-5, and took down Ayanna Varma and Mia Thomann of Williams in the quarterfinals, 8-0. The Babson duo will face seventh-seeded Sarah Youngberg and Mariia Kornilova of Wesleyan in the semifinals on Sunday.
Sophomores
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) posted a big upset third-round doubles victory over fourth-seeded Jane Ladaga and Mia Roets of Williams, 8-6, but fell in the quarterfinals to MIT's Chloe Zeng and Charley Chen, 8-4.
First-year
Tina Liu (Plantation, Fla.) registered a three-set victory over Maria Kornilova of Williams in the third round of the A singles draw, but saw her run in the tournament end in the quarterfinals to Deshpande of MIT, 7-5, 6-2.
Junior
Riya Matharoo (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Alyssa Khou of Tufts in the second round of the B singles bracket, but dropped a tough three-set loss to Katelyn Wu of Williams in the third round, 6-1, 5-7, 10-8. Sophomore
Sarai Dorismond (Carlsbad, Calif.) and first-years
Manuela Moscoso (Quito, Ecuador) and
Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) all won consolation matches in the B singles bracket.
