MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Senior
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and first-year
Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) advanced to the third round in both singles and doubles, and seven different players recorded at least one victory to highlight a number of strong performances on Friday for the Babson women's tennis team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships.
The top seed in the A singles draw, Cristiani defeated Natalia Leroy of Wesleyan 6-2, 6-4 in the first round before rallying for a 1-6, 6-0, 10-4 victory over Lucy Mitchell of Tufts in the second round. Sikharulidze was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Payton Dugan of Colby-Sawyer in her opening match and then knocked off fifth-seeded Lulu Wu of Middlebury 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 32.
Cristiani and Sikharulidze received a first round bye in doubles as the third seed and outlasted Fiona Lee and Katie Driscoll of MIT 8-7 (7-5) to advance to Saturday's third round.
Sophomores
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) also advanced to the third round of the doubles draw with a pair of victories on Friday. They defeated Avani Chitale and Chahana Budhbhatti of Brandeis in round one, 8-4, and followed it up with an 8-2 triumph over Suzanne Pogorelec and Willow Assante-LaBash of Bowdoin in the second round.
Junior
Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and first-year
Manuela Moscoso (Quito, Ecuador) were 8-1 winners over Naomi Williams and Lila Moldenhaur of Bowdoin in the first round before falling 8-5 to the top-seeded duo of Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados of MIT in the second round.
First-year
Tina Liu (Plantation, Fla.) beat Chitale of Brandeis 6-1, 6-2 and then downed Anna Lardner of Middlebury 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) to join
Matia Cristiani and Sikharulidze in the third round of the A singles draw, while Kamal reached the round of 16 in the B singles bracket with a pair of victories. She defeated Jahnavi Vaghasia of Trinity 6-3, 6-2 in her opening match and then upset top-seeded Marie Frati of Bowdoin 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 in round two.
Junior
Riya Matharoo (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) recorded a 7-5, 6-1 win over Tagan Skulley in the first round of the B draw and was leading Alyssa Khou 6-1, 3-2 in round two when her match was suspended due to darkness. Her second round match will be completed on Saturday morning.
Doubles play will get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday, while singles action will begin at approximately 12 p.m.
