Box Score 3 WELLESLEY, Mass.—The Babson College women's tennis team got its season off to a successful start at the Wellesley Invitational over the weekend. The Beavers went 15-4 in singles and 11-4 in doubles competing against Brandeis University, Trinity College and the host Blue.
FRIDAY
Babson opened the weekend by splitting six doubles matches against Brandeis. Senior
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and first-year
Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) were 6-3 winners over Rebecca Suarez and Milana Sofizade, sophomore
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) and first-year
Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) beat Avani Chitale and Chahana Budhbhatti in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-0), and junior
Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and first-year
Tina Liu (Plantation, Fla.) downed Sanjana Kumar and Charly Saltz 6-2.
SATURDAY
The Beavers won eight of nine singles matches against Brandeis in the morning and followed it up by securing victories in four of five doubles matches during the afternoon session against Wellesley.
Matia Cristiani, Wang, Liu, Sorrentino, Kamal and sophomore
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) were straight-set winners, while Sikharulidze, senior
Grace Starcher (Morristown, N.J.) and junior
Riya Matharoo (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) all went down a set before rallying to win in three.
Matia Cristiani and Sikharulidze, Wang and Liu and the duo of Sorrentino and
Alessandra Cristiani cruised to easy wins in doubles, while first-year
Manuela Moscoso (Quito, Ecuador) and Kamal edged Dalia Khera and Praslin Hayes in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).
SUNDAY
Babson went 7-3 in the morning singles session against Wellesley.
Matia Cristiani,
Alessandra Cristiani, Liu, Matharoo, Kamal and Moscoso all posted straight-set triumphs, while Wang rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-3 win over Nandini Patel.
Sikharulidze and Sorrentino both dropped three-set decisions to the Blue.
The Beavers concluded the weekend by going a perfect 4-0 in doubles against Trinity. The duos of Wang and Liu, Allesandra Cristiani and Sorrentino, and Kamal and Moscoso were all 6-0 winners, while
Matia Cristiani and Sikharulidze recorded a 6-3 victory over Allie Francis and Emilia Romano.
Babson returns to action next Saturday as it travels to Salve Regina for its NEWMAC opener at 12 p.m., in addition to taking part in the Holy Cross Invitational.
