Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) delivered Babson College its second consecutive NCAA Division III Doubles Championship with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the top-seeded Middlebury College duo of Nina Farhat (Southborough, Mass.) and Sahana Raman (Acton, Mass.) in Tuesday's national title match.
The victory was the 17th in a row for the third-seeded duo of Soffer and Cristiani, who captured Babson's first women's national championship in any sport last May. By avenging one of their two losses on the year, Soffer and Cristiani end the season with an overall record of 26-2 while becoming the first back-to-back Division III championships since Julie Raventos and Linda Shin of Williams in 2015 and 2016.
Farhat and Raman, who beat Soffer and Cristiani 6-0 back on March 19, end their year with an overall record of 30-4.
After splitting the first two games, Soffer and Cristiani won back-to-back deciding points to seize control of the first set. Cristiani rallied from 40-30 down to hold serve and she and Soffer erased a 40-15 deficit in the following game for a service break on a double fault for a 3-1 advantage.
Farhat and Raman held serve on a deciding point to cut their deficit to 4-2, but Cristiani won her service game and broke Farhat for the second time to close out the opening set.
Both teams held serve over the first three games of the second set before Soffer ripped a cross-court backhand on break-point to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead. The Panthers answered back with a break of their own, but Cristiani blistered a forehand winner down the line and Soffer followed with a winner of her own on break point to put Babson up 4-2.
Cristiani held serve to make it 5-2 and Babson went up 40-15 before clinching their second consecutive title on a double fault.
