Evan Eichenlaub (Bethlehem, Pa.) is tied for second place as the 20th-ranked Babson College men's golf team holds a two-stroke lead after 36 holes at the Cochran Collegiate.
The Beavers shot 306-293 to post a 36-hole score of 23-over 599, which is two shots clear of No. 10 Lynchburg (299-302). No. 9 Oglethorpe (303-300) is in third place at 27-over 603, Mary Hardin-Baylor (315-292) is fourth at 31-over 607 and No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan (312-300) rounds out the top five at 36-over 612.
Berry struggled to an opening round 83 on Monday morning before responding with the best round of his career, a bogey-free 67. Starting on the 12th hole, he made three birdies over his first eight holes and then carded two more on Nos. 9 and 10 before closing with a par to move into a tie for fourth place at 6-over 150.
One of the players he is chasing is Eichenlaub, who shot 74-73 to slide into a tie for second place at 3-over 147. He made three birdies and six bogeys on the day and enters Tuesday's final round trailing Edward Coffren of Lynchburg by just one shot.
First-year
Aman Vantipalli (Alpharetta, Ga.) joined Eichenlaub and Berry in the top 10 by shooting 76-75 to finish the day in a tie for eighth position at 7-over. He made two birdies in his morning round and overcame a pair of early double-bogeys in the afternoon by playing his final 12 holes at even par.
Junior
Colin Fowler (Portland, Ore.) followed his first round 76 with a 6-over 78 that has him tied for 24th place at 10-over. He made four birdies and was even-par over the final 10 holes of the opening round, but gave back four shots over the first six holes of round two.
Junior
Shane Quinn (Morristown, N.J.) shot 80-78 and is tied for 53rd at 14-over entering Tuesday's final round.
The Beavers, who will playing alongside Lynchburg and Oglethorpe on Tuesday, get the final round going at 9:30 a.m.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
• Babson, which is playing in its fourth 54-hole tournament of the season, also held a share of the 36-hole lead at the West Pines Collegiate back in early October before finishing fourth.
• The Beavers' second-round score of 293 is their lowest in five rounds at Colonial Country Club.
• Fowler is tied for first in the field in par-5 scoring at 3-under, while Eichenlaub's 27 pars on Monday tied for first among 90 players.
• Thirteen of the 18 teams in the Cochran Collegiate field are among the top 50 in the latest Scoreboard Division III rankings.
