Men’s Ice Hockey Skates Past Keene State in Little East Debut, 4-1

Box Score KEENE, N.H.— Senior Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.) tallied a goal and an assist and sophomore Evan Brown (Little Silver, N.J.) picked up three assists as Babson College skated past Keene State College, 4-1, in the inaugural Little East Conference (LEC) men's ice hockey game Friday evening inside Keene ICE.

With the victory, the Beavers remain undefeated on the young season at 3-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the LEC, while the Owls suffer their first loss of the year and drop to 2-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.

Juniors Jimmy Fallon (Milton, Mass) and Sean Senier (Melrose, Mass.) and senior Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ont.) were goal scorers for the Beavers, and sophomore Raphael Marcoux (Quebec City, Quebec) and seniors Nolan Woudenberg (Collegeville, Pa.), Cam Joslin (Cohasset, Mass.) and Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.) registered assists. Senior Nate Mueller (Summit, N.J.) earned his third win in goal with 16 saves for the Green and White.

First-year Zack Chouinard (Trois-Rivières, Que.) scored the lone goal for the Owls with assists from senior Declan House (Roselle Park, N.J.) and sophomore Sean Gray (Lowell, Mass.). Sophomore Ben Skelton (Roanoke, Va.) finished with 57 saves in goal for the Owls.

It was actually the Owls who scored first 90 seconds after the opening face-off. After winning a battle for the puck in the left-wing corner, House came away with the puck and fed Chouinard in front who slammed home his second goal of the year at 1:30.

The Beavers came back to tie the score with a power play goal two minutes later. Schmitt took a pass behind the net from Brown, circled around in front and slid a pass across the slot to Fallon, who buried his second goal of the season at 3:41.

Babson took the lead midway through the first period. A shot by Marcoux from the left point was blocked in the slot by a Keene defenseman, but Schmitt knocked in the loose puck for his first goal of the season at 10:19 for a 2-1 advantage for the visitors.

The Green and White peppered the Keene goal for 25 shots in the second period, compared to four shots on the Babson goal, but the teams went into the third period separated by just one goal.

The Beavers pulled away with a pair of markers 71 seconds apart late in the third period. Brown made a nice cross-ice pass in the neutral zone to Senier at the attacking blue line on the left side and he broke past the Keene defense, went in alone on the goal and slid a backhander through the goalie pads for his second of the season and a two-goal lead with 6:03 remaining.

The visitors sealed the win a little more than a minute later when Joslin retrieved a shot by Andriole behind the net, found Kennedy at lower left circle, who snuck a shot inside the left post for his second goal of season with 4:52 on the clock.

Babson finished with a 61-17 advantage in shots and went 1-for-3 on the power play.

Bother teams will play another LEC game on Saturday as Babson travels to Western Connecticut for a 2:30 p.m. face-off while Keene State hosts Southern Maine at 3:30 p.m.
