BRUNSWICK, Maine—The Babson College women's tennis team competed against some of the top programs in the region over the last three days in the Bowdoin Invitational. The Beavers played a series of singles and doubles matches against the host Polar Bears, Brandeis, Middlebury and Tufts.
FRIDAY
The Beavers opened the weekend by splitting 10 singles matches against Tufts. Senior
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Athena Li, first-year
Tina Liu (Plantation, Fla.) beat Melanie Woodbury 6-2, 6-2 and classmate
Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) rallied for a 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-1), 10-7 victory over Lucy Mitchell.
Junior
Riya Matharoo (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) downed Ryan Wuhrman 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) and sophomore
Sarai Dorismond (Carlsbad, Calif.) was a 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 winner over Nikki Kintiroglou.
Babson also dropped four of five doubles matches against Bowdoin with the lone victory coming from junior
Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and first-year
Manuela Moscoso (Quito, Ecuador), who beat Marie Frati and Lila Moldenhauer 6-4.
SATURDAY
The Green and White went 3-5 in its morning singles matches against Middlebury highlighted by
Matia Cristiani and Moscoso rallying for three-set victories. Cristiani edged Elsie Van Wieren 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 and Moscoso topped Elizabeth Doak 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. Sophomore
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) also recorded a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) triumph over Anna Lardner.
Alessandra Cristiani also was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Suzanne Pogorelec as the Beavers went 5-3 in afternoon singles against Bowdoin. First-year
Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) beat Zoe Sun 6-1, 6-4, Kamal topped Caroline Stuhlfaut 6-0, 6-3 and Dorismond and sophomore
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) both came from behind for three-set victories.
Dorismond was a 2-6, 6-0, 10-8 winner over Moldenhauer, while Sorrentino recorded a 4-6, 6-0, 10-8 triumph over Frati.
Babson split four doubles matches against Tufts with the pairings of
Matia Cristiani and Sikharulidze and Wang and Dorismond accounting for the victories. Cristiani and Sikharulidze edged Stephanie Woodbury and Natalie Hu 6-4, while Wang and Dorismond were 6-2 winners over Athena Li and Kyra McAndless.
SUNDAY
The Beavers concluded the weekend by sweeping three doubles matches apiece against both Brandeis and Middlebury.
Matia Cristiani and Sikharulidze recorded a 6-4 triumph over Marie Reyes and Milana Sofizade of Brandeis and were 6-3 winners over the Panthers' duo of Anna Lardner and Ren Barton.
Alessandra Cristiani and Sorrentino bested Avani Chitale and Galia Harmelin of the Judges 6-2 and topped Elsie Van Wieren and Diya Pachamuthu of Middlebury 6-4, while Wang and Dorismond record a 6-2 victory over Charly Saltz and Sanjana Kumar of Brandeis. Moscoso and Kamal completed the final day's sweep by edging Lulu Wu and Elizabeth Doak of Middlebury, 6-4.
Matia Cristiani and Sikharulidze will wrap up the fall at the ITA Cup beginning on Thursday in Rome, Ga.
