Mollica Becomes Program's Career Three-Point Leader as Women's Basketball Falls to Coast Guard, 67-62

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) matched her career high with 24 points and became the program's all-time leader in three-point field goals but Babson College suffered a 67-62 loss to the visiting Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.

Babson, which has dropped three of its last four games, drops to 9-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Coast Guard snapped a two-game ski to improve to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC.

Mollica scored 21 of her 24 points in the first half and tied a career-high with six three-pointers while passing Erin Young '15 for first place on the program's all-time list for the Beavers. Senior Camilla Silk (Medfield, Mass.) finished with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go along with a game-high nine rebounds, while classmate Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) and junior Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) both scored six points in the loss.

Senior Julia Mann (Central Square, N.Y.) and junior Dorothy Stotts (Edina, Minn.) both scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures for the Bears. Senior Glory Blethen (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) added 13 points, classmate Kelly Hagerty (Emerald Isle, S.C.) contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and six blocks, and Stotts led all players with seven assists in the victory.

Coast Guard went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and Stotts scored nine points as part of a 12-4 run to build a 23-13 advantage late in the first quarter.  The Green and White answered with a 32-point second quarter that saw it shoot 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from floor and 6-of-7 (85.7 percent) from long distance to take a 45-34 lead into the locker room.

Mollica, who scored 18 points in the stanza, and first-year Madison Hart (Greenwich, Conn.) opened the period with back-to-back three-pointers, Silk converted a pair of hoops inside and Mollica buried consecutive pull-up jumpers to give the Beavers a 27-23 lead less than four minutes into the frame. Mollica drilled three straight triples following another bucket in the paint by Silk and Perreault canned a three-pointer from the top of the key as the lead swelled to 13 with just over a minute to go before halftime.

Mollica started the third with a three-pointer and Flynn and Silk answered with hoops each time the Bears cut their deficit to single digits to keep Babson in front 56-46 with 5:34 left in the third. Hart knocked down a jumper at the 4:17 mark and Perreault drilled a three-pointer to make it 61-52 with 2:04 to go in the stanza before the Beavers went ice cold.

Blethen ended the third quarter with a trifecta and then followed another triple by junior Farrah Peterein (Oxnard, Calif.) with a layup to cap a 10-0 run that put Coast Guard in front 62-61 with 6:07 to play in the contest. Fist-year Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) stopped a scoring drought of more than seven minutes by going 1-of-2 at the free throw line to tie the game with 4:48 remaining, but Hagerty put the visitors in front for good with a jumper at the 2:18 mark.

Hagerty blocked a pair of shots down the stretch and Mollica's potential game-tying three-pointer rimmed out with 0:08 left before Mann put the game away with a pair of free throws.

The Beavers shot 48.1 percent over the first three quarters before going 0-of-13 over the final 10 minutes. The also outscored the Bears 24-14 in the paint and finished with a slim 40-39 edge on the glass. Coast Guard shot 41 percent from the floor and outscored the Green and White 8-1 at the free throw line.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to WPI at 2 p.m., while Coast Guard hosts Wellesley at 1 p.m.
