BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College head baseball coach
Matt Noone announced the hiring of
Mitchell Holmes as the program's new full-time assistant coach on Monday.
Holmes comes to Babson after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Holy Cross. During his time with the Crusaders, he oversaw the hitters and catchers, was involved with recruiting and assisted with the organization of the programs' camps and clinics.
After helping Holy Cross make its first Patriot League Tournament appearance in three years in 2022, Holmes played a key role in helping the team produce 26 victories, its most since 2016, last spring. The Crusaders set a single-season program record for walks (295) and totals that rank second in all-time in school history in runs scored (350), RBI (306) and stolen bases (74). Additionally, Holmes helped Holy Cross raise its scoring average by nearly two-and-a-half runs per game and its OPS by 120 points over the last three campaigns.
"We are excited to have Mitchell join our program," commented Noone. "His strong work ethic, positive energy and experience at both Holy Cross and in the NECBL will benefit our players. I look forward to working with him and know he'll work hard to help us continue to be successful."
Holmes, who also served as the director of player development at Wofford University from August 2021-January 2022, spent the last three summers as the head coach of the Vermont Mountaineers in The New England College Baseball League (NECBL). He owns a regular season record of 87-38-1, which is good for the highest winning percentage (.706) of any coach over the last three years, and led the team the playoffs in each of his three seasons as manager.
During his tenure, the Mountaineers recorded the most regular season wins in the league in both 2022 and 2024 and made three playoff appearances. Holmes also was selected as an NECBL All-Star Game manager in three consecutive seasons.
"I could not be more excited about the opportunity to work with Coach Noone all of the players," said Holmes. "Babson baseball has had a track record of success and I am looking forward to learning and helping the program continue to grow."
A 2021 graduate of the State University of New York at Cobleskill, Holmes was a three-year starter for the Tigers batting .284 with 10 doubles, 30 RBI and 49 runs scored in 77 games. After earning his bachelor of technology degree in plant science, he completed his masters of education in positive coaching and athletic leadership from the University of Missouri in May 2022.
