Baseball Visits Coast Guard in NEWMAC Tournament Action on Thursday

WHAT TO KNOW

•    After defeating MIT on Tuesday, Babson begins the double-elimination portion of the NEWMAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Coast Guard.

SERIES HISTORY
•    Babson is 66-25 all-time against Coast Guard in a series that dates back to 1978. 
•    The Beavers have won 13 of their last 16 games against the Bears and the teams split a pair of extra-inning decisions back on April 27. 
•    The teams have split their last six games with the Green and White outscoring Coast Guard 23-20

POSTSEASON HISTORY
•    Babson is 8-2 all-time against Coast Guard in the conference playoffs and Thursday's matchup will be the first between the teams in the postseason since 2016. 
•    The Beavers defeated the Bears four times in six matchups in the NEWMAC Tournament between 2010-16. 
•    Thursday's matchup will be the first between the teams played in New London. 

LAST MEETING
•    First-year Dante D'Avanzo went 2-for-5 with two RBI and broke a 4-4 deadlock with his single in the top of the 10th inning as Babson defeated Coast Guard, 6-4, in game two of a doubleheader on April 27 in New London. 
•    Graduate student Luke Tanner was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored and sophomore Zander Teator tossed three shutout innings of relief for the Beavers, who tied the game on senior Brant Savage's solo homer in the top of the eighth. 
•    Nathan Stafford went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles and Carson Cho was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored for the Bears, who trailed 3-0 going to the bottom of the fourth. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Third-seeded Babson (26-10), which is ranked second in Region II, has won six consecutive games after defeating sixth-seeded MIT, 9-7, in Tuesday's tournament opener. 
•    Graduate student John Nowak hit a two-run homer in the first, senior Ike Kiely went 3-for-4 with two RBI and classmate Jack Julian drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth for the Beavers, who saw eight of their nine starters reach base in the win. 
•    Savage is batting .345 with 20 doubles, six home runs, 32 RBI and 29 runs scored, junior Justin Guest is hitting .321 with eight doubles, two homers, 19 RBI and 25 runs scored, and Tanner has raised his average to .313 with 11 doubles, two triples, four homers, 34 RBI and 28 runs scored. 
•    Sophomore James Clark is 5-2 with a 4.44 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 52.2 innings, junior Luke McClintock (1-2, 2.35 ERA) is holding opposing hitters to a .223 average in 30.2 innings of work over 16 appearances, and Teator (4-1, 3.06 ERA) has record four saves and a 0.68 WHIP while striking out 21 and holding opposing hitters to a .131 average in 17.2 innings out of the bullpen. 
 
SCOUTING THE BEARS
•    Second-seeded Coast Guard (24-9), which is ranked fifth in Region II, enters the postseason on a three-game winning streak after closing the regular season with a 5-0 victory over Emerson in game two of last Saturday's doubleheader. 
•    Wyatt Duthu went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Cho was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and an RBI, and Harrison Milbert struck out six and gave up just two hits over 8.0 innings to improve to 6-0 for the Bears, who tied their program record for wins. 
•    Stafford is batting .449 with 14 doubles, five homers, 44 RBI and 33 runs scored, John Tacchini is hitting .370 with seven doubles, two dingers, 21 RBI and 17 runs scored, and Richard Barkley enters the postseason with a .306 average to go along with 11 doubles, 10 homers, 41 RBI and 29 runs scored. 
•    Vito Giordano is 3-1 with a 2.52 ERA and 60 strikeouts against just six walks in 53.2 innings pitched, Raymond Priddy is 5-2 with a 2.75 ERA over 36.0 innings in a team-high 14 appearances, and Ryan Karman (3-1, 1.59) has four saves and is holding opposing hitters to a .115 average in 28.1 innings of relief.  

CLARK EARNS CONFERENCE RECOGNITION
•    After recording a career-high nine strikeouts and allowing just one hit over 7.0 shutout innings on Saturday against Springfield, Clark was tabbed as the NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday. 
•    He retired 17 of the first 19 batters he faced and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning to improve to 5-2 on the year with the victory. 

SAVAGE BREAKS DOUBLES RECORD
•    With his opposite field RBI double in the bottom of the sixth against UMass Boston on Sunday, Savage set a new single-season program record with his 19th two-bagger of the year. 
•    He became the first player in program history with 20 doubles in a season on Tuesday after bettering the previous mark of 18 doubles set by Dave Ahern '11 during his All-America campaign as a senior back in 2011. 

REGIONAL IMPACT
•    Babson and Coast Guard are two of three NEWMAC teams to appear in the latest NCAA Region I rankings, which were released on Wednesday. 
•    The Beavers, who boast the region's second highest strength of schedule (.581), are second behind Salve Regina, while the Bears are fifth behind NESCAC leaders Middlebury and Colby. 

STREAKING INTO THE POSTSEASON
•    Tanner owns an 12-game hitting streak and is batting .360 with eight doubles, a triple, a home run, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored during this stretch. 
•    Nowak has reached base in each of his 25 starts this season and is batting .405 with two doubles, three homers and 12 RBI to go along with a .522 on-base percentage and a .676 slugging percentage over his last 11 outings. 
•    Guest has a hit in each of his last five games and has reached base safely in six consecutive outings.

PLAYING FROM IN FRONT
•    Since falling behind in a 4-3 loss game-one loss to WPI back on April 21, the Beavers have scored first in 11 consecutive games. 
•    Babson has outscored its opponents 77-39 during this stretch, which includes a 32-2 edge over the first three innings. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    Babson is 19-4 this season when outhitting its opponents. 
•    The Beavers are 11-3 this spring in games decided by one or two runs. 
•    The Green and White is 21-2 when allowing five runs or fewer. 
•    Babson is 21-1 when leading after six innings. 
•    The Beavers have gone 22-2 this season when their pitching staff allows two or fewer extra-base hits.

•    The winner of Thursday's contest will play at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, while the loser will face an elimination game on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. against top-seeded Salve Regina or fourth-seeded Wheaton in Newport, R.I.
