Baseball Concludes Regular Season Against Springfield and UMass Boston at Govoni Field

WHAT TO KNOW

•    Babson closes out the regular season with a NEWMAC doubleheader against Springfield on Saturday afternoon and will meet UMass Boston on Sunday at Govoni Field. 

SERIES HISTORY
vs. Springfield

•    Babson is 40-22 all-time against the Pride in a series that dates back to 1996. 
•    The Beavers split last year's doubleheader and have won 18 of the last 19 contests versus Springfield over the last decade. 
•    The Green and White has won the last six games played between the teams at Govoni Field. 

vs. UMass Boston 
•    Babson is 26-13 all-time against the Beacons in a series that dates back to 1982.
•    The Beavers have won three straight games versus UMass Boston going back to 2019, which includes a 7-3 victory just over a week ago, after dropping six in a row in the series from 2015-18. 

LAST MEETING
vs. Springfield

•    Senior Brant Savage and sophomore Ryan Hvozdovic both had three hits, Michale Cook '23 tripled and drove in three runs and Anthony St. John '23 gave up just two earned runs over 6.1 innings to help Babson defeat the Pride, 7-4, in game two of a doubleheader on April 2, 2023, in Springfield, Mass. 
•    Senior Tanner Santos went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored and sophomore Zander Teator added an RBI single for the Beavers, who jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning. 
•    Andrew McCarty was 3-for-4 with two doubles and N Diamond and Michael Barrett each had an RBI single for Springfield. 

vs. UMass Boston 
•    Santos and graduate student Luke Tanner both knocked in a pair of runs as the Beavers defeated the Beacons, 7-3, on April 24 at Govoni Field. 
•    First-year Dante D'Avanzo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, graduate student John Nowak added an RBI double and sophomore Connor Doan struck out five and allowed just two runs over 7.1 innings for the Babson, which tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. 
•    Aidan Blake went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Mariano Jimenez doubled as part of a two-hit day for UMass Boston, which stranded eight men on base in the loss. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Babson (22-10, 10-4 NEWMAC) has won two straight and 18 of its last 22 games after defeating Wheaton, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon. 
•    Senior Jack Julian produced a two-out single in the top of the seventh, first-year Jason Finkelstein struck out four over 6.1 innings and three relievers retired eight of the nine batters they faced for the Beavers, who gave up just four hits on the day.
•    Savage is batting .354 with 17 doubles, six home runs, 30 RBI and 25 runs scored, Santos is hitting .347 with eight extra-base hits, 20 stolen bases, 24 RBI and 33 runs scored, and Tanner boasts a .305 average to go along with nine doubles, two triples, four homers and a team-high 33 runs batted in. 
•    Graduate student Greg Nieskens (2-2, 3.65 ERA) owns a 1.05 WHIP in 49.1 innings over eight starts, sophomore James Clark is 4-2 with a 5.12 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 45.2 innings, and Teator (4-1, 3.45 ERA) has three saves and has recorded 20 strikeouts in 15.2 innings of work out of the bullpen. 

SCOUTING THE PRIDE 
•    Springfield (16-19, 2-12 NEWMAC) has won two of its last three games after beating Dean 13-6 on Wednesday. 
•    Cole Zalegowski went 3-for-4 with three RBI, Luke DiMauro hit a two-run homer and Adam Fine swiped six bags for the Pride, which got multiple hits from six different players. 
•    Michael Lepere is batting .308 with three doubles, 14 RBI and 16 runs scored, Andrew Sweet is hitting .288 with seven doubles and 13 runs batted in, and Ryan Sorgi enters the weekend with a .275 avarage to go along with nine doubles, two homers, 15 RBI and 21 runs scored. 
•    Connor Caverly is 2-3 with a 3.51 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 51.1 innings over nine starts, Nate Kelleher-Mochak is 3-3 with a 4.44 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 46.2 innings, and Matthew Robinson has gone 2-3 with a 1.17 earned run average in 11 appearances out of the bullpen. 

SCOUTING THE BEACONS
•    UMass Boston (24-13) had its three-game winning streak snapped falling 15-5 at No. 6 Salve Regina on Thursday. 
•    Bostyn Burris and Mike Meagher both homered, Max Garner had an RBI triple and Mike Gorham produced an RBI single for the Beacons, who allowed 11 runs over the second and third innings. 
•    Justin Gouveia is batting .383 with 11 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 22 stolen bases, 34 RBI and 46 runs scored, Blake is hitting .380 with eight doubles, five triples, nine homers, 42 RBI and 51 runs scored, and Burris boasts a .351 average to go along with 12 extra-base hits, 29 RBI and 31 runs scored. 
•    Ross Dexter is 3-3 with a 3.94 ERA in 45.2 innings pitched. Dillon Ryan (5-1, 4.25 ERA) has recorded a team-high 71 strikeouts in 53.0 innings and Max Moss is 5-0 with a 4.78 ER and 45 strikeouts in 43.1 innings of work. 

PLAYOFF PUSH
•    The Beavers enter the final day of conference play in third place in the league standings, a game behind Coast Guard (11-3) and two games in back of Salve Regina (12-2). 
•    Babson, which can finish no worse than the third seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament, would need to sweep Springfield and have Emerson sweep Coast Guard to move into second place and earn a bye into the double-elimination portion of the championship. 
•    If the Green and White finishes third, it would host either MIT or Clark in NEWMAC Tournament play-in game on Wednesday. 

REGION I RANKINGS
•    Babson is third in the second edition of the NCAA Region I rankings, which were released on Wednesday. 
•    The Beavers, who have the best strength of schedule number (.588) in the region, are 4-9 this season against regionally-ranked foes this spring. 

STREAKING BEAVERS
•    Tanner owns a seven-game hitting streak and is batting .394 (13-for-33) with six doubles, a homer, nine RBI and five multi-hit games during this stretch. 
•    Nowak has reached base in each of his 21 starts this spring and is second on the team with a .457 on-base percentage. 
•    Julian and D'Avanzo both own three-game hitting streaks. 

A CALL TO ARMS
•    Finkelstein recorded his sixth victory of the season on Tuesday at Wheaton, which is the most since Sam Whelan '08 won six games back in 2005. 
•    Teator has been superb in his last five appearances allowing no runs on just two hits and one walk while striking out seven over 8.0 innings. 
•    Senior Tristen Spalter, who pitched for the first time in over two months in a win over Johnson & Wales on April 25, got the final two outs of the seventh inning in Tuesday's victory at Wheaton. 
•    As a staff, the Beavers rank 27th in Division III in hits allowed per nine innings (8.46) and are 34th nationally with a 1.34 WHIP. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    Babson is 15-1 this season and 40-8 over the last three years at Govoni Field. 
•    The Beavers are 15-5 when scoring at least six runs and 10-2 when scoring 10 or more runs. 
•    The Green and White is 18-4 when outhitting its opponents this spring. 
•    Babson is 17-1 when leading after six innings on the year.
