#5 Women's Tennis

No. 15 Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 12 Trinity (Texas), 5-4

Box Score ATLANTA — No. 12 Trinity University (Texas) captured two out of three doubles matches and earned a split of the six singles matches to pull out a 5-4 victory over No. 15 Babson College in a non-conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at The WoodPEC on the campus of Emory University.

With the loss, the Beavers went down to defeat for the third time in their last four outings, all to ranked teams, and dropped to 7-4 on the season. Trinity stopped a two-match losing streak and improved to 10-3 overall.

Senior Adèle Fernández (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and first-year Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won the lone doubles match for the Beavers, and junior Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), sophomore Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and junior Laetitia Rizk (Beirut, Lebanon) were singles winners for the Green and White in the setback.

Juniors Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas) and Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz.), ranked eighth in Division III in doubles, knocked off the second-ranked tandem of Olivia Soffer and Cristiani in the number one doubles match, 8-6. Babson returned the favor at number two as Fernández and Chaniel Soffer took down the 19th-ranked duo of senior Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas) and sophomore Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif.), 8-2. The Tigers completed doubles play with a 2-1 advantage after senior Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas) and first-year Rosabella Andrade (Southlake Texas) outlasted senior Juliette Moschella (Little Silver, N.J.) and first-year Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) in a tiebreaker at number three, 8-7 (7-4).

Olivia Soffer and Cristiani bounced back for the Beavers and won the top two singles matches. Soffer, ranked 17th in Division III, defeated eighth-ranked Hill at number one, 6-3, 6-3, and third-ranked Cristiani breezed past Hughes at number two, 6-0, 6-2. The other match to end in straight sets was Kim defeating Chaniel Soffer at number four, 7-5, 6-3.

Rizk dropped her first set but pulled out a victory over Andrade at number five, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Tigers secured the team victory when 27th-ranked Levin overcame sophomore Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) at number three, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, and Cushing defeated  sophomore Mariana Campos (Houston, Texas) at number six, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0.

The Beavers return home to host No. 40 and local rival Brandeis on Sunday, April 14, at the Babson Tennis Courts.

• Saturday's match was the first career meeting between Babson and Emory.
• Cristiani extended her singles winning streak to nine and improved to 18-1 this season
Olivia Soffer and Cristiani had their eight-match winning streak at number one doubles snapped and dropped to 22-2 on the season.
