No. 11 Women's Tennis Drops 5-4 Decision at No. 24 Tufts

Box Score MEDFORD, Mass.—No. 24 Tufts University trailed after doubles and dropped the first two singles matches before rallying for four straight wins to defeat 11th-ranked Babson College, 5-4, in non-conference women's tennis action on Friday afternoon. 

Babson, which has split its last four matches, is now 6-2 on the year. Tufts snapped a two-match losing streak to improve to 3-5 overall. 

Junior Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador), who are ranked second in Division III, picked up the first point of the match for the Beavers with an 8-4 victory at number one doubles. The Jumbos got on the board as sophomore Steffy Jullian (Escazu, Costa Rica) and junior Sophie Wax (Newton, Mass.) downed Babson sophomores Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) and Elena Keitt (Austin, Texas), 8-4, before the Green and White regained the lead in the match as senior Adèle Fernández (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and first-year Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) edged sophomore Stephanie Woodbury (Eads, Tenn.) and first-year Natalie Hu (Scarsdale, N.Y.) in a tiebreaker to win 8-7. 

Olivia Soffer made quick work of senior Zoe Kava (New York, N.Y.) with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number one singles and Cristiani followed by winning  6-1, 6-2 at number two to give the Beavers a 4-1 advantage in the match. Wax started the Jumbos' rally with a 0-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 triumph over Stasiowska at number three, and sophomore Lucy Mitchell (Chicago, Ill.) snuck past Chaniel Soffer 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 at number to close the gap to 4-3. 

Hu tied the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Babson junior Laetitia Rizk (Beirut, Lebanon) before Jullian outlasted Keitt in the decisive match at number six singles with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory to complete the comeback. 

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Salve Regina at 10:30 a.m., while Tufts hosts Bates at 2 p.m. 

MATCH NOTES
•    The Beavers have dropped all seven of their matches against the Jumbos going back to 1994.
•    Prior to Friday's loss, Babson had won its last 17 matches when leading after doubles. 
•    The Green and White is now 3-2 this season against top-30 teams in the ITA rankings. 
•    Olivia Soffer and Cristiani are 20-1 on the year in doubles and have won their last six matches.
