Baseball Opens NEWMAC Play at MIT on Tuesday Afternoon

SERIES HISTORY

•    Babson is 59-41-1 all-time against MIT in a series that dates back to 1980.
•    The Beavers took two of three from the Engineers last season and have 15 of the last 21 meetings between the programs.
•    The Green and White has been victorious in five of its last seven trips to Cambridge dating back to 2018.

LAST MEETING
•    Teddy Schoenfeld hit a first-inning homer and went 4-for-5 with two RBI to help MIT avoid a weekend sweep with a 5-3 win over the Beavers in the back end of a doubleheader on April 22, 2023, in Babson Park. 
•    Senior Brant Savage went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, while classmate Ike Kiely went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Babson, which won the first two games of the three-game weekend series. 
•    Kyle Sonandres went 2-for-4 with two RBI in support of Karl Meyer, who struck out six and scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort for the Engineers. 
 
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Babson (5-6, 0-0 NEWMAC) has won four of its last five games after rallying from a four-run deficit to defeat Keene State, 7-6, in the home opener on Monday at Govoni Field.
•    Senior Tanner Santos capped a five-run eighth inning rally with a two-out, bases-loaded double in Monday's win. Savage went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while graduate students Luke Tanner and John Nowak and junior Walter Sadowsky each singled for the Beavers. Sophomore Zander Teator struck out two in 1.2 innings of shutout relief to pick up his first collegiate win.
•    Savage is batting .417 with six doubles, four homers, 12 RBI and 14 runs scored, Santos is hitting .333 with four doubles, a team-high 15 RBI and 14 runs scored, and Tanner checks in at .295 to go along with one double, one home run and 10 runs batted in.
•    Graduate student Greg Nieskens is 1-0 with a 4.20 ERA in three starts, sophomore James Clark is 1-1 with 16 strikeouts in 14.1 innings and first-year Jason Finkelstein is 1-1 with 16 strikeouts and just four walks in 18.2 innings on the mound. Senior Jimmy Weick (0-1, 1.50 ERA) and graduate student Zach Magee (1 save, 7 Ks in 6.1 innings) have both made five appearances out of the bullpen. 

SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
•    MIT (8-6, 0-0 NEWMAC) split a doubleheader at Montclair State on Friday winning the opener 9-4 before dropping game two 9-6. 
•    Owen Malone went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI, Zev Moore was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Schoenfeld had three hits and knocked in another run for the Engineers, who scored six times over the final two innings. 
•    Schoenfeld is batting .441 with five doubles, a home run, 11 RBI and 20 runs scored, Moore is hitting .365 with six extra-base hits, seven stolen bases and 11 runs batted in, and Michael Finch enters the week with a .317 average to go along with seven home runs, four doubles and 20 RBI
•    Meyer is 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 22.0 innings over four starts, Ethan Siegel (0-0, 2.93 ERA) has made five appearances striking out 19 and holding opposing hitters to a .189 average in 15.1 innings, and Brian Rapanan has gone 2-0 with one save and a 3.50 earned run average in 18.0 innings on the year. 

NEW LOOK NEWMAC
•    Salve Regina, which was ranked eighth in last week's D3baseball.com national poll, became the ninth member of the NEWMAC back in July. 
•    The Beavers and their league counterparts will now play a total of 16 conference games this season with each team playing either twice and the top six teams advancing to the conference playoffs. 
•    Babson, which advanced to last year's NEWMAC Tournament final, was picked third behind defending champions Wheaton and Salve Regina in the preseason coaches' poll. 

SUCCESS AGAINST THE ENGINEERS
•    Savage went 7-for-14 (.500) with two home runs, two doubles, nine RBI and five runs scored in last year's three-game series, while sophomore Chris Basile also hit .500 (6-for-12) with three runs batted in. 
•    In six games over the last two years against the Engineers, Kiely is batting .333 (7-for-21) with three homer, seven RBI and eight runs scored. 

HOT AT THE PLATE
• Sadowsky extended his hitting streak to four games with a knock against Keene State, batting .538 (7-for-13) with five walks, a double, four RBI and seven runs scored in that span.
• Santos has hit safely in five of his last six outings with four multi-hit games, batting .400 (10-for-25) with four doubles, 12 RBI and 10 runs scored.
• Savage his second four-hit game in his last four outings against Keene State and has five multi-hit games this season.

STREAKING BEAVERS
• Sadowsky and first-year Dante D'Avanzo have hit safely in their last four games, while Teator and sophomore Ryan Hvozdovic both own three-game hitting streaks. 
• Savage and Santos have reached base in 14 and 13 consecutive games, respectively, while Hvozdovic has reached base in eight straight starts. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers have scored at least six runs in nine of their first 11 outings and are putting 9.1 runs per game.
• Babson's comeback win over Keene State was just the fourth in the last 35 games when trailing after seven innings.
• The Green and White are 2-1 this season and 7-8 since the start of last year in games decided by one or two runs.
