Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) were winners in both singles and doubles and Soffer broke the program record for career singles wins as No. 13 Babson College knocked off No. 10 University of Redlands, 5-4, in a battle of highly ranked women's tennis programs Tuesday afternoon at the Coach Jim Verdieck Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Beavers improved to 3-0 with their second straight victory over a ranked team, while Redlands (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season after four consecutive wins over ranked teams.
Soffer recorded her 60th career singles win for the Beavers, breaking the program mark she shared with Rebecca Stone '12, who posted 59 singles win from 2008-12.
The Beavers and Bulldogs split the first two doubles matches, with Soffer and Cristiani taking an 8-3 victory over first-year Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and senior Livi Rockwood (Park City, Utah) in the top flight, and Redwood juniors Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Christine O'Brien (Leawood, Kan.) winning 8-4 over senior
Juliette Moschella (Little Silver, N.J.) and junior
Laetitia Rizk (Beirut, Lebanon) at number thee.
The Beavers won broke the tie with a key 8-7 victory at No. 2 by senior
Adèle Fernández (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and first-year
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) over first-years Kaylin Kielty (Canyon Lake, Calif.) and Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, Nev.).
The teams split the singles matches, with Babson winning at Nos. 1, 2, and 6, and Redlands earning victories at Nos. 3, 4, and 5.
Olivia Soffer won 6-3, 6-4 over Deng at No. 1, Cristiani was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Brady at No. 2, and Moschella captured a 6-2, 6-2 victory over junior Deja Brown (San Diego, Calif.) at No. 6. Sugai posted a 6-2, 6-3 verdict over
Chaniel Soffer at No. 4, Kielty was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over sophomore
Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) at No. 5, and Rockwood rounded out the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Rizk.
The Beavers will play their third straight ranked opponent on Thursday when they take on No. 14 Sewanee at 2 p.m. ET in Malibu, Calif. Redlands will battle its sixth of nine consecutive ranked opponents on Friday against No. 7 Emory at 12 p.m.
