Improbable Rally Sends No. 22 Trinity Past Baseball, 15-14

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas—Babson College senior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) homered twice as part of a nine-run seventh inning but No. 22 Trinity University answered with a 10-run eighth and defeated the Beavers, 15-14, in non-conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Babson drops to 0-2 on the year while Trinity improves to 2-0.

Savage knocked in three runs and scored three times, sophomore Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and four RBI, and senior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) hit a two-run homer as part of a two-hit game and scored twice for the Beavers. Sophomore Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) singled three times, senior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) had two hits and graduate student Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.) drove in two runs in the loss.

Graduate student Greg Nieskens (Pine Brook, N.J.) struck out five and gave up two runs on three hits over 5.0 innings but settled for a no-decision after the Babson bullen allowed 13 runs over the final three frames.

Senior Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas) was 2-for-2 with a double, a grand slam and five RBI, first-year Pierce Matthews (Carrollton, Texas) hit a three-run homer and junior Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas) went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored as part of the Tigers' 15-hit attack. Sophomore Trajan Lee (Dallas, Texas) fanned four and allowed just one run on three hits over 2.1 innings of relief to earn the win.

Julian gave the Green and White a 3-1 lead with his two-run blast in the fifth and Hvozdovic and Santos produced RBI singles to extend the margin to 5-1 in the top of the sixth. Trinity pulled even with four runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Beavers appeared to regain control of the game by erupting for nine runs in the top of the seventh.

Savage put the visitors back on top 6-5 with a solo shot and Hvozdovic followed with a two-out, three-run blast to right to make it 9-5. Julian scored on Basile's RBI single to center, Tanner knocked in two more runs with a double to right center and Savage closed the uprising with a two-run homer to left for as the lead swelled to 14-5.

Graduate student Zach Magee (Indianapolis, Ind.) worked a perfect bottom of the seventh recording a pair of strikeouts, but junior Matt Milone (Amston, Conn.) quickly ran into trouble in the eighth as the first six batters reached base. Holloway got the rally started with an RBI double to center and Matthews' three-run shot to left got Trinity back within 14-9.

Sophomore Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) came on in relief of Milone and sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around an error but junior Brandon Nelson (Missouri City, Texas) cut the Tigers' deficit to 14-11 with a two-out single through the right side and Holloway followed a walk to senior Colt Harris (Katy, Texas) with a grand slam to left field giving the hosts their first lead since the bottom of the first.

Lee then closed the door on the Beavers in the ninth recording a pair of strikeouts to secure the improbable victory.

The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. EST.
