Baseball Opens 2024 Season with Three-Game Series vs. No. 22 Trinity in San Antonio

SERIES HISTORY

•    Babson is 7-8 all-time against Trinity in a series that dates back to 2017.
•    Eight of the 15 games between the teams have been decided by one or two runs and the Tigers have outscored the Beavers by a slim 93-89 margin. 
•    Babson has won two out of three games at Trinity twice (2020, 2022), while the Tigers have taken two out of three against the Beavers on three occasions (2017, 2019, 2023). 
•    The Green and White will open its season in San Antonio versus Trinity for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

LAST MEETING
•    Ryan Noone M'23 and Michael Cook '23 combined to drive in eight runs while Stephen McClendon '23 allowed four runs over 6.1 innings to help Babson defeat Trinity, 11-6, to wrap up a three-game series on February 26, 2023, in San Antonio. 
•    Noone came through with a bases-clearing double in the second inning and hit a two-run homer in the fourth, while Cook went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI for the Beavers, who had five different players record multiple hits in the win. 
•    Brandon Nelson went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI and Colt Harris added a solo home run for the Tigers, opened the series with 6-1 and 3-2 victories over the Green and White in a doubleheader on February 25. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Babson (0-0) returns 24 players from a team that finished 24-18 overall and advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament final last spring under the direction of 22nd-year head coach Matt Noone
•    The Beavers bring back three of their top four run producers, led by senior Brant Savage who batted .327 with 11 home runs, nine doubles, 46 RBI and 36 runs scored in 42 games. 
•    Sophomore Chris Basile batted .313 with five extra-base hits, 26 RBI and 27 runs scored, classmate Ryan Hvozdovic hit .313 with five doubles, two homers and 26 runs batted in, and senior Tanner Santos finished the year with a .459 on-base percentage to go along with 38 walks, 23 stolen bases and 40 runs scored. 
•    Senior Tristen Spalter went 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 69.1 innings over 10 starts last year, junior Matt Milone (1-2, 5.06 ERA) was second on the team with 14 relief appearances and classmate Cole Velis (2-0, 4.22 ERA) held opposing hitters to a .195 average in 10.2 innings out of the bullpen. 
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
•    No. 22 Trinity (0-0) brings back 23 players from a team that went 31-16 and advanced to the NCAA Regional final before falling to East Texas Baptist last season. 
•    The Tigers batted .295 as a team last spring and return four players that drove in at least 20 runs, highlighted by Jack Peterson who batted .289 with nine extra-base hits, 25 stolen bases, 26 RBI and 39 runs scored in 45 games.
•    Ty Preston hit .365 with seven doubles, 22 runs batted in and 20 run scored in 33 games, Christian Holloway finished with a .324 average to go along with seven homers, four doubles and 21 RBI, and Harris led the team with five home runs and added five doubles, 21 RBI and 23 runs scored in 40 contests. 
•    Jackson Teer made 14 starts going 9-1 with a 2.71 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 86.1 innings, Joseph Chavana (3-4, 3.64 ERA) fanned 61 batters in 64.1 innings of work and Jack Briese (2-2, 3.80 ERA) made eight of his nine appearances out of the bullpen and held opposing hitters to a .237 average. 

POLL POSITION
•    After finishing second in the regular season standings and advancing to the conference title game for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, Babson was picked to finish third when the NEWMAC released its preseason coaches' poll last week. 
•    Three-time defending conference tournament champions Wheaton earned eight of nine first-place votes to finish atop the poll, while league newcomer Salve Regina came in ahead of the Beavers in second place. 

TOUGH TESTS 
•    After opening the season with three games against Trinity in San Antonio, the Beavers will travel to Florida for seven games against some of the top teams in the country. 
•    No. 3 Baldwin Wallace, which is coming off a trip to the College World Series, both won at least 36 games and made the NCAA Tournament last season, while North Centrall (Ill.) ended the year with 27 wins. 
•    Following four games in Port Charlotte, the Beavers travel to Fort Myers for games against Franklin & Marshall, Scranton and Pitt-Bradford. Both Franklin & Marhsall and Scranton won 26 games a season ago. 

POWER SURGE
•    Savage's 11 homers last season were just two shy of the program's single-season record and his 46 runs batted are tied for seventh in a single season and were the Beavers most since Jake Oliger '20 knocked in 57 runs back in 2019.
•    He led the team with 18 multi-hit games and 15 multi-RBI games on the way to earning all-conference and all-region honors last spring.

PRODUCTION AT THE PLATE
•    Hvozdovic (16), Basile (14), Santos (12) and senior Ike Kiely (10) joined Savage among the team leaders in multi-hit games last spring. 
•    All five players also drove in at least 11 runs and scored at least 18 times a season ago. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    The Beavers went 17-5 when scoring the first run of the game last season.
•    Babson went 17-1 when recording at least 10 hits and finished 21-4 when recording multiple extra-base hits.
•    The Green and White scored at least six runs in 20 of its 24 victories in 2023.
•    The Beavers are 37-3 over the last two seasons when leading after six innings. 

UP NEXT
•    The Beavers begin their spring break trip to Florida against Heidelberg in Port Charlotte on March 8.
