Box Score LATHAM, N.Y.—No. 16 Babson College was unable to rally from an early deficit after doubles and suffered a 6-3 loss to No. 29 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in non-conference men's tennis action on Saturday night.
With the loss, Babson slips to 3-2 on the year while Rensselaer opens the season at 1-0.
The Engineers seized control of the match by sweeping all three doubles points. The ninth-ranked duo of junior Aiden Drover-Mattinen (Portugal Cove-St. Philips, Newfoundland) and sophomore Andy Zhu (Richmond, British Columbia) downed the Beavers pairing of juniors
Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) and
Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) 8-2 at number one, first-years Tsubasa Okada (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Joel McCandless (Lexington, Mass.) were 8-6 winners over graduate students
Jonah Wilson (Gilbert, Ariz.) and
Andrew Watson (Charlottesville, Va.) at number two, and juniors Jonathan McMillan (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Bryce Burnham (Rocklin, Calif.) topped first-years
Kerem Ozlale (Istanbul, Turkey) and
Brandon Reznik (Boca Raton, Fla.) 8-6 at number three.
Wilson picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the 41st-ranked Zhu at number two singles, while Lepsoe was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Okada, who is ranked 14th nationally, at number three for the Green and White. Ozlale also bounced back with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Rensselaer sophomore Tasmay Shah (Chander, Ariz.) at number six.
Anderson won a first-set tiebreaker before falling to Drover-Mattinen 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 at number one singles. Junior
Wesley Zhang (Staten Island, N.Y.) split the first two sets at number four but suffered a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 loss to Burnham at number four, while Reznik dropped a 7-6, 6-4 decision at number five.
Babson returns to action on Saturday, March 2, when it travels to Bowdoin at 12 p.m.
