Maxim Zlobinsky (Greenvale, N.Y.) all registered victories in both singles and doubles as No. 9 Babson College cruised past Wheaton College, 7-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis match Friday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
With the win, Babson improves to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC, while Wheaton dropped its second straight match and fell to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Beavers were also rained out of a conference match against Emerson earlier in the day.
The Beavers finished off a sweep of the doubles in less than 35 minutes. Wang and Mendoza knocked off junior Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) and sophomore Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) at number two, 6-2; senior
Martin Mejia (Cali, Colombia) and first-year
Max Lidman (Stockholm, Sweden) posted a 6-4 victory over juniors Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) and Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) at number three; and Merson and Zlobinsky clinched the doubles sweep by taking down junior Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and first-year Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) at number one, 6-3.
The Beavers proved too strong for the Lyons after taking all of the singles matches in straight sets. Zlobinsky opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Berteaux at number four; first-year
Rishi Batlanki (Monroe Township, N.J.) finished off a 6-0, 6-1 verdict over Murray at number five; and classmate
Sourish Gadhi (Morganville, N.J.) clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Van Dyke at number six.
Mendoza kept things going for the Beavers with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Wyshner at number three, and Wang downed Munoz at number two, 6-1, 6-4. Merson completed the whitewash by outlasting Galligo at number one, 6-1, 7-6.
The Beavers will head to Pennsylvania on Saturday for a match at Haverford at 2 p.m. Wheaton travels to No. 25 MIT for a conference tilt on Saturday at 1 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers have won 15 consecutive matches and 18 of the last 20 contests versus Wheaton and leads the all-time series, 25-10, dating back to 1996.
• The Green and White have won 11 consecutive matches against NEWMAC foes going back to the start of last season, and are 29-3 in regular season conference dual matches going back to 2021.
• Merson improved to a team-leading 14-2 in singles this season, Wang upped his record to 11-5, and Wang and Mendoza are now 19-6 in doubles.
