WESTWOOD, Mass.— Babson College senior back
Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Powers helped No. 7 Babson close the regular season with a pair of lopsided wins last week. The senior center back helped the Beavers allow just three shots on goal in a 5-1 win over the University of New England on Tuesday and blanked Mount Holyoke 8-0 to conclude league play unbeaten for the eighth year in a row on Saturday. Powers also scored her first goal of the season late in the first quarter of Babson's win over UNE.
A four-year veteran who has played in 72 career games with 31 starts, Powers has helped the Beavers to a NEWMAC-leading 0.68 team goals against average and 10 shutouts. The Green and White have allowed just 13 goals all season and only three goals in 10 conference games. Powers has started all 19 games on defense and leads the team and ranks tied for ninth in the NEWMAC with six assists.
Babson (16-3, 9-0 NEWMAC) captured the NEWMAC regular season crown and top seed in this week's conference tournament. The Beavers earned a first-round bye and will host a semifinal game on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at MacDowell Field against either Wellesley or Salve Regina.
